Hey guys, I applied Duke ED and am now starting to apply RD to schools. I was wondering what some of you feel my chances are of getting into the following schools:

UVA (Out of State)
Rice
Wash U St Louis
Penn
Tulane
Colgate
Emory
University of Florida (Out of State)

Stats:
GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.1 W

ACT: 31 with writing
APs- Human Geo (4), Eng Lang (4), Physics B (4), US (4)
Junior Year grades (supposedly the most important) - all A's (took Lang, Physics B and US junior year). I slacked a little in 9th grade but hopefully made up for it sophomore and junior years.

Recs from teachers are good.
I think my common app essay is pretty unique and several people have told me it was very good.

Duke is my first choice but would also love to go to UVA. How difficult is it for someone like me (from NY) to get into UVA? Do I have a chance?

Thanks for your responses

Thank you for replying to my thread. I’m sorry, I don’t know much about those schools, but your sat I score is very good, especially your essay. You might want to try some UC’s? if you’re interested in living in CA that is.

Wash U St Louis–reach
Penn–reach
Tulane–in

UVA (Out of State) - decent chance, but OOS does make it a bit of a reach
Rice - borderline between match and reach, I think a bit better than 60-40 you get in.
Wash U St Louis - agree that it is a reach
Penn - agree that it is a reach
Tulane - you will get in and most likely get a merit scholarship of $20,000-25,000
Colgate - Don’t know enough about their admissions
Emory - About the same as Rice
University of Florida (Out of State) - You should get in unless they are overwhelmed with instate applicants this year.

Go visit Tulane if you haven’t yet. Same with Rice.

Thanks fallenchemist. I’m looking for one more poster to give his/her opinion.

Rice-match
Penn-high reach
UVA(OOS)-they really like good essays once you have the stats…low reach
Tulane-low match most likely in—(don’t be fooled by ~30% acceptance rate)
Emory—they like high stats, thats all i know.
Colgate—match (don’t know that much about this school)
Wash U—in between UVA(OOS) and UPenn, but its closer to UVA (OOS)
UF—how much does state residency matter? Your in 4 sure, but i’m curious…

Final thoughts: From CC standards and articles and everything i’ve read and heard: this years admissions process is tough. Better applicants are applying but the problem is more good applicants are applying to more schools. Schools like UPenn, Dartmouth, etc. are seeing 20-30% jumps in ED applications! So these predictions above could be slightly inflated. Nevertheless, if i were 2 bet on it, come April, you’ll be choosing between rice and UVA. Good luck. :)
