Chances Please! Stern....out of state!

Out of Stater!

I am a junior - Asian American (great, I know!)

However, unlike most of my peers I am NOT by any means a "math/science" person, though I do love math, I love english/humanities wayyyy more!

Here's a break down of my stats as of right now:

Rank: top 2-3% out 550 people (estimated, could be a little higher) --> though this year, my classes along with ECs have been extremely difficult. So im hoping I can maintain that level even after final exams, which are coming up so soon!

GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting)
Class load: hardest possible no doubt!
SAT: Eh. not so hot yet, barely making 2100 on practice exams. However, I have had much better luck with the ACTs - I am constantly scoring in lower 30's on that from practice exams. Planning on taking it in Feb.

ECs:
EIC of School Paper - first junior to become one in a looong time, i am absolutely certain that the newspaper advisor will write me a first class rec!

Write for other community papers as well, including our cultural one.

Many essay competition awards; won 1st place in state for a newspaper article I wrote. That same article won 4th place nationally at another competiton (which i will not list here for security reasons as you can easily look me up)

Internship at congressman office summer before junior year

Teen Rep on local Youth Commisson - began this system of teen reps to help form better student-community alliances

With members of youth commission helped form young democracts society to promote Obama and help students who can't vote (like me) to still get involved in the poltical scene - created flyers, sent letters of concerns/request to the congressman about issues that bothered us, etc. etc.

500+ volunteer service hours through hospital volunteering (the usual lol), tutoring, after school enrichment program helping for younger children, etc. etc.
Math Honor Society President

NAtional Honor Society

French Honor Society

DECA state winner

What do you think??

Look, I understand the reason why many people decide to place "Chance" threads. They are worried about their chances here, obviously, or they want to see if NYU would be a safety. The fact of the matter is this, NYU, along with most other colleges, are completely random. You have great stats it seems and since you won all of those essay competitions, I'm sure you can or have worked up a great essay which really gets to the topic and is interesting. If you manage to accomplish that and break the mold of the cookie-cutter book-smart Asian American, then you stand a very, very good chance. Good luck.

Tiny152, Thank you very much! You're right, Chance threads are completely pointless....but sometimes you simply can't help it. Plus, I'm one of the first few in my family to go to college in the US, so it's definitely nice to have some advice from those who are more experienced than I am or my parents are.

I completely understand. Most of the people attending college in my extended family went to state universities because their parents immigrated from India. So I was in much of the same position you were in a few weeks ago. Be prepared for the worst if NYU is your number one, though. I wasn't and it's killing me now, lol.

Hey I think you have a good chance at NYU, and if you are getting close to 700 in CR, and above 750 in Math, I do not think it will look horrible, so don't fret. It looks like you have great EC's and an amazing GPA! You have incredibly high raw scores compared to me, but you forgot one thing you need........SAT II's! Try and score 700 and above. I was accepted ED with 28K in FA+Scholarship, and 5K in Misc. so yeah I guess I can't say NYU gives horrible aid.

Here was my chance thread long ago when I was worried sick about getting in or not! ;)

Thanks so much! Congrats on your acceptance!

you should be fine- i got into stern and i had similar stats as you-

GPA weighted-3.99/ unweighted 3.92
SAT 2180- 740m, 730wr, 710cr
ACT- 35
sat II- physics 790, mathII 800
all classes ap/gifted(like honors)
no community service
captain of varsity swim team/president of spanish club/member of mu alpha theta

thats prety much it...you should be fine, as long as your math is like a 700 if your reading is about 700, or math 750-800 if your reading is less than 700

good luck

While sometimes it seems like admissions are random - a qualified person might get rejected occasionally, sometimes an applicant that doesn't seem stellar gets in - admissions are NOT random. There is always a reason someone is accepted/rejected. Sometimes someone doesn't have perfect grades, but wrote an outstanding essay that conveys specifically how they will contribute to a college. Sometimes an outstanding applicant writes a vague, meaningless essay or admissions feels that person just won't contribute to the college. Admissions are not random though.

OP - I think you have a great shot. Btw being Out of State won't matter cause it's a private college....good luck

^^^molly, I think he mentioned OOS because if you live in ny, it's more difficult and competitive and harder to get it. they look for geographical diversity and they already have millions of kids applying from ny .....acc to my counselor's logic

thanks, makes sense now. yep, I guess there's a huge ny population here...we're such a smart state, so whaddaya expect? lol

I think you have a decent chance of admission.
