Unweight: 3.64
3.5% class rank
I think I had pretty strong Letters of Rec, both teachers really liked me.
Hook- I have lost 90 lbs since my Junior year, got in shape. I wrote about it for my essay, felt it was pretty good.

I know my stats aren't very good compared to a lot of people, but I would just like an honest opinion. I just got rejected by UCLA (with ELC status), so I am feeling pretty down. Any opinions are welcomed, just wondering if I have any chance (I know it sometimes a guessing game, so no worries.)

You have good ECs and great class rank.

That is not a hook.

Your standardized scores are not as competitive.

Good luck. I’d say NU is a reach for you.

Debatable.

The only reason that I said it was a hook was because it is something that separates me from other applicants. But other than that, no, I guess its not. I just thought that at some private schools something like that might help admittance, but what do I know? haha

That’s not really a hook. Depending on what you are applying for I’d say NU is a high match-high reach. For some of the tougher sciency programs your SAT simply won’t be good enough :(. However for other schools it can be alright.

What are your SAT scores only counting CR and M since NU doesn’t really look at Writing? From the info you’ve provided, I think that NU is a high reach for you. Sorry. :(

Could you guys please chance me as well? My post is under “Chance Me …CRY!”

Eh, I’d say, unless you can get your scores up to 2100+, Northwestern is way out of reach for you. If you got rejected from UCLA, you shouldn’t expect too much from Northwestern, as it is a harder school to get into.

There are always special instances though, and I wish you the best of luck.

^ I don’t agree with the above post. I think UCLA is just as competitive, in my humble opinion. But I am from California, so perhaps I am biased (or more familiar with the school)…

NU is a very high reach.
The weight loss thing makes for an interesting personal story/essay, but it’s not a “hook” as that term is generally used.

Calmama, perhaps the “holistic review” that the top tier UC schools do, coupled with the crushing number of applications, probably makes an applicant’s chances different at UCLA than at NU. However, I suspect NU is a bit more competitive to get into. I’m speaking as a mother of a freshman at NU, who was also admitted to these UC schools: Berkeley (Trustee), LA, San Diego and Santa Barbara (the last two as his safety applications.)
