Chances please!! :)

Chance please? :)
My cousin is applying to selective schools and would like to know where she stands. Input is greatly appreciated!

South Asian female living in Canada. Competitive public school, 1500+ kids. At least 1-2 go to Ivies each year.

GPA: 3.8 with hardest classes
SAT: 2250
APs: Calc (11 - 5), Psych (11 - 5 self study), bio 12, chem 12, physics 12, English 12, French 12 (all that are offered... Only offered in gr 12 but she skipped a year in math for calc)

This year as a senior she is taking math at the local uni since she's done hs math.

In grade 9 she went to a mediocre, very small school. No clubs. They wouldn't let her start any and there was little student interest. Grade 10 she switched to the other school.

ECs:
Volunteer at library 50+ hrs in grade 9 (children's activities and stuff like that)
Taught language classes for kids at place of worship (9-11)
Hospital volunteer 150ish hours (10-12)
Volunteer and leader at random school events (10-12)

Part of mentorship program that matched hs students with medical students so they could learn about pursuing a career in medicine and skills development (10) youngest participant

Volunteer tutor (10-12)

Young scientists club (10-12), participated and placed in regional competitions

Global Issues club (10, shut down afterwards) - organized fundraisers, can drives, etc and raised awareness for issues

DECA, debate club, wrote some stuff in school newspaper (11-12)

Started a community service club that raises funds and awareness for the advancement of education in 3rd world countries. Designed webpage for it so it could be a community outreach. Collaborated with other organizations. Started mentorship program at local k-8 school for kids to start their own fundraisers, etc with the help of hs students. (started in 11)

Fundraised for Canadian Cancer Society (10)
Volunteered in university research lab (11-12)
Kumon employee (12)

Started chapter of Canadian Cancer Society's youth team at her school and led various efforts in fundraising and awareness (11-12). Organized relay for life team for schlol.

Youth symposium at place of worship - 2nd place regional speech 2010-11. Asked to speak about religious issues for the masses (non competitive).

Currently working with an established program regarding world languages (12).

She is also trying to start a volunteer based tutoring group for younger kids that also links them to community service and activities (keeps them away from negative things... needed in downtown area).

How do these stats look? Is there anything she should have done differently? She got 80% in gr 11 math in gr 10 at her new school because her old school was too behind and the new one is beast at math lol. Will this hurt her a lot? Even with AP calc score 5? And the uni course?

Are the ecs ok? Anything super duper wrong that she should leave out, or is it ok? Thanks so much

PLEASE CHANCE FOR:

Just any school with <20% admit rate

Bump please ! We will chance back lol

UMichigan
University of Pennsylvania

UChicago
Cornell
Carnegie Mellon

She might not get into any of them.

Not so impressive academic credential (for top Asian applicants)

Most colleges on the list require SAT II tests

International applicant

Chances at Michigan, UCB and UCLA if she does not apply for FA.

but won’t they take into consideration the difficulty of the school? it’s actually a very difficult school and she took the most challenging courses. some teachers refuse to give any marks above 90 even if you have a mark that’s actually higher. also, i dont know if the gpa calculation is right… percentage average was about 94.

sorry i totally forgot to list those! i know she took bio chem and math II and they were all above 760… not sure exactly.

don’t some US schools consider canadian applicants to be domestic? or is that only for green card holders

tbh, if she’s going for science, she doesn’t have the mindblowing ECs for it
the ECs are all pretty generic and she doesn’t seem to show committment or leadership to the extent that will get noticed by admissions

her grades are average and nothing too special. But she made the unofficial cutoff and the grades won’t detract too much from the rest of her application.

She might have a chance if her essays are amazing.

If she is a domestic applicant with 2350+ and 3.95+ GPA and multiple 800 on SAT IIs, then

HYPSM
Hopkins
Georgetown
University of Pennsylvania
Columbia
U Chicago
are reach schools. They are reach schools for everybody (especially for Asians.)

She needs to have some schools that she can easily get in.
What about LACs?

chance back please http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1208313-chances-early-action-gmu-hofstra-american-etc.html</a></p>

What’s her class rank? That will be most helpful to know since you say it’s a rigorous school.

Honestly, her ECs are adequate for those schools. Sure, they’re not amazing, but they are definitely strong. Do not let this elitist attitude on CollegeConfidential fool you into thinking that your stats are worse than they really are.

Also, she should probably take two SAT Subject Tests. Many of these schools require two, and some (e.g. Hopkins) recommend three.

chance back please http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1208313-chances-early-action-gmu-hofstra-american-etc.html</a></p>

Sorry I totally forgot to list her SAT II scores! Bio chem math II and they’re all above 760… not sure. The school doesn’t rank but there are very few kids in that % range and she was the only one in the class who took math a year ahead. One other kid used to but he graduated.

@Samonuh: thank you so much. I didn’t understand why some people were saying no chance. I’ve seen people with stats like this with comments saying that they have strong chances. Asians included, and some with not so good stats.

Is there anything she can do to go more in depth with her ecs if that’s what you guys say is going to keep her out?

Look, it is very difficult for international applicants to get into top colleges.
Ask anybody, they will say the same thing.

Yes, she does have cahnces.

But, my point is that she needs to have some schools she can easily get in because many of the schools on her list are reach schools for everybody. Yes, everybody no matter how good you are.

I completely understand where you’re coming from. She’s not even sure if she wants to apply, which is why I offered to post stats here to get an idea. If she doesn’t get into these schools, she will go to uni in Ontario. Not a big deal, but she wanted to know her chances for her reach schools.

Side note: is there any real advantage of attending a top school?

You mean top high school?

University.

I will be a freshman so I do not really know.
I guess I will find out in a few years.

You can ask that question in a different forum.

Anyway, I hope she gets into a great college.

It’ll be hard as an international applicant to say the least. However it seems like volunteering and outreach really is one of her passions. The 3.8 however, is a bit low. Mine at a 3.92 is only top 15th for my school!

Princeton is definitely big on volunteering.
