I have played golf all four years of H.S. and won most improved player sophomore year.

I am applying to NYU, UCF (central florida), FSU (florida state), USF (south florida), and JMU (james madison). I plan on attending film school and wanted to know what you guys thought with my chances on these schools. Any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I don’t understand. Are you applying to UG film programs? If so, have you done any work in film/arts/drama/animation? Any portfolio, if necessary? If one is not necessary for the particular school, then, I would think they would look at EC’s and essays and interests as well as grades. Sorry, I am not much help.

My son was accepted into FSU film school and is a freshman now. You have to apply to both FSU and the film school(separate apps) at the same time(by mid-Oct); no portfolio required, so grades, test scores, EC’s are important. The essay is very important; they want to see passion and potential for film-making in the future. If you make the first cut, they bring you in for interview and they make their selections from there. They don’t even look at the app until you are first accepted by the university in December. usually notify you in Feb as to whether you got an interview; interview in March and you find out soon after that if you are accepted to the film school which you don’t officially start until sophmore year; then it is all film for 2 and a half years including summers - no other classes at all - you have freshman year to get liberal arts reqs done and then you can finish those the summer between freshman and sophmore years or 2nd half of senior year. Did you visit FSU and take the tour and attend information session?

Wow, times have changed. How the h*** do you get a 5.43 GPA even if it’s weighted? Our valedictorian had a 4.4 or something like that (I graduated in 2000).

Anyway, as for chances, I think you have a good shot at getting into JMU. That’s where I went so I’m using that as a point of reference. Your unweighted GPA and other credentials were similar to mine but your class ranking is more impressive than mine so I think you have a good shot at JMU. Good luck.

For NYU and UCF I know you must submit a portfolio which I am currently working on. Thank you stantonmom for your advice on FSU’s film program that was very helpful. I have visited all of the schools mentioned before with the tour and the information session. The reason I have a 5.43 is because of all the dual enrollment classes and AP which add .08 and honors which adds .04 to your GPA. The only problem with JMU is that they don’t really have a film major. Also, I have not done anything in film, drama, or the arts. I plan on working with my schools drama department on their upcoming play. Do you have any advice on NYU or UCF? Thank you.

We toured UCF and spoke with dean of film school - while he was very nice, my son didn’t get the same “feel” as he did at FSU. I still think the school would have worked out did he not get into FSU and given your stats, UCF does give a lot of merit money which we turned down. Are you NMSF? look on their website. Finalists can get a full ride…

My son was not National Merit(he was commended), but had a 4.2 weighted, 2180 SAT and 32 ACT. UCF gave him the Provost scholarship which is $6K per year. Had he also been National Merit, he would have received a lot more from them… something to definitely keep in mind if money is consideration.

okay thank you for that information. I do not think I am a NMSF though but money will be needed for me to attend college so scholarships will help!
