Do I have a good chance of being admitted into UMD-CP as well as the journalism program?

OP,
Your SAT score of 1130 is going to hurt your odds. You have great ECs, but your app could be screened out before it’s read. Good luck, it could still happen.

I think and this is my honest opinion that you will get in! they take the EC’s for that major very seriously and the newspaper stuff you have is great! your gpa is wonderful (exactly what I had) I’d say you are def into the school and most likely the major(honestly depends on the applicant pool so you never know)! keep it up and don’t slack senior year and if you have any questions for a current UMD student feel free to message me! :)

Well, the problem is that when your SAT/ACT are in the bottom quarter, then you must be selected from the fattest portion of the normal distribution, of the applicant pool. It can happen, but there is luck involved and certainly nothing “def” about it.

I understand; however, every college admissions officer will tell you that averages are basically complete bs. Essays have a lot of weight specifically at UMD because they have both essays and short answers. I am living proof that averages can’t determine acceptance and so are MANY of my friends here. So yes averages can give you an idea but applications are too complex to tell from just sat/act/gpa. Regardless, good luck to the op and be sure to let us know the outcome! If you get in UMD is amazing so feel free to ask me about it!
