I haven’t started looking at many colleges yet, but I’m looking at UC Irvine, Brown, Northwestern, and Tulane. What would you chance me for these schools?
Weighted GPA: 3.38 (will be up to 3.48 by end of the year)
SAT: 2350
ACT: 36
Currently taking 6 AP’s.
School: Magnet in Maryland.
Main Extracurriculars: Taekwondo (on and off 10 years, minor competitions), Violin (10 years, again minor competitions), USNCO Semifinalist, JV Badminton (1 season), Latin Tutoring.
Any advice to improve? Thanks.
UCI is very GPA focused along with the rest of the UC’s so GPA will be an issue. Great test scores but for the UC’s, high test scores do not make up for lower than average GPA. If you have a good reason for lower than average grades, this could be addressed. Since you are OOS, you need a minimum UC GPA of 3.4 to apply so calculate your UC GPA see link. OOS applicants only get honors points for AP/IB or DE courses.

If you meet the requirements, it is worth an application but make sure you have solid essays along with your EC’s.
Also note that since you are OOS, UC’s do not give financial aid, so expect to pay full price at around $55K/year which is expected to increase by 8% over the next few years.
your gpa is scarily low. in addition, since your ECs are just taekwondo-whatever, violin-everyone does it, usnco semifinalist-doesn’t mean much since semis are dependent on your school, not national, jv badminton-1 season is not enough, tutoring-alright. It definitely just seems like you spent your entire high school life studying for the SAT and the ACT-not good
Not happening at any of those schools sorry. The GPA is too low.
I’m trying to connect the dots - Maryland to UC Irvine who considering Brown. In my mind, that is like you GPA and your ACT score.
My daughter is a junior this year and starting to plan ahead. I am surprised how much emphasis there is on GPA given that nearly everyone seems to have a 4.0 nowadays. Of course, in larger cities many seem to get ACT/SAT tutors and classes too.
I would tweak the college list and really work on the GPA.
Colleges will see your GPA and your standardized test scores, and have the impression that you are a smart person, but don’t work hard/actively in school. Try to work on your GPA, as some previous people have said. Also, try to work on something in your EC’s that will give you state/national recognition
