ExtraCurriculars:
1.Editor-in-Chief of my school publications magazine for 2 years (and have had other editor positions for the other two years). this is my favorite extra-curricular and I plan on placing emphasis on this in the application.
2. Honor Societies: National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society(Events Coordinator), Spanish Honor Society.
3. Volunteer Work: I have over 400 hours in the hospital, library, red cross, and homeless shelter. Also I am a memeber of an executive teen board in the library.
4. Other Clubs: Mock Trial(juror), culture club (secretary), key club, yearbook, writing and literature workshop(president),amnesty, habitat for humanity, brazilian exchange.
5. part of a youth leadership forum in my city(not one of those national leadership forum stuff. this works with respect to my city only and consists of only 8 kids)
6.viola for 8 years.
7. I am working this summer as an intern in a local newspaper. last 2 summers I worked for my mom's company as a receptionist/secretary.

I am pretty sure that I can write stellar essays and get really good recommendations from counselor and teachers(expecting a great one from my english teacher because I really stood out). Also, I think I will do well in the interviews.
also what do you guys think for other schools:
Dartmouth(1st choice. ed)
university of chicago(ea)
northwestern
emory
upenn
columbia
nyu
brown
cornell

Dartmouth(1st choice. ed): Reach
university of chicago(ea): High Match (assuming the strong essays you're predicting)
northwestern: High Match
emory: Match
upenn:Reach
columbia: Reach
nyu: Match
brown: Don't know
cornell: High Match

Be sure to demostrate your interest in Emory because it's something they weigh in the asmissions process.

Hmm. Interesting chances there Weasel.

What's your reasoning in the drastic difference of Dartmouth being a Reach and Cornell being a high match?

Is Dartmouth that much harder to gain admission to than Cornell?

I think Emory is a match rather than a reach, or if any, a slight reach.

thanks weasel and blaze. i saw on other posts that emory applicants were talking about ordering a video. what is that all about? and blaze, i think cornell is easier to gain admission into than dartmouth. last year from my school, only 2 kids got into dartmouth, while 8 kids got into cornell(and my school is very lucky with cornell).

The DVD visit is basically a way to demonstrate interest by ordering a DVD from Emory's website. The DVD is about Emory.

<a href="http://www.emory.edu/ADMISSIONS/visit/visit-order-video.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.emory.edu/ADMISSIONS/visit/visit-order-video.htm</a></p>

thanks blaze. i've ordered it already. so are you a current emory student by any chance(because your location says atlanta)? i was just wondering how is the atmosphere at emory?is it easy for people to fit in? i am just a little concerned because people say that emory is just a rich kids school in the south, but i dont think it is. can you elaborate?

Cornell's Acceptance Rate: 6621/24452 = 27.1% <a href="http://admissions.cornell.edu/downloads/2009_profile.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://admissions.cornell.edu/downloads/2009_profile.pdf</a>
Dartmouth's Acceptance Rate: 2172/12755 = 17.0% <a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu/apply/generalinfo/quickfacts/quickfacts-admissions.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.dartmouth.edu/apply/generalinfo/quickfacts/quickfacts-admissions.html</a></p>

I don't think there is any significant self-selection going on at Cornell to make its acceptance rate higher.

While you have an excellent shot at a number of these schools, you'll want to make sure you have a "safety" on your list since nothing is certain these days! Alternately, some folk find it comfortable to apply to a rolling admissions school in the very early fall (a place like U Michigan but there are many others). That way you know you've got an acceptance in your back pocket and can be a little more relaxed about the decisions that come in later.

thank-you cami. i actually do have 2 state schools as my safeties(rutgers and penn state).i just chose not to list them. rolling admissions sounds like a good idea, though.

Emory is not JUST a rich kids school in the South. Sure -- you'll find plenty of truth in stereotypes about Emory, such as the plethora of rich students from NYC. However, it's fairly diverse in terms of geography, wealth, and race. If you want to fit in, it's not hard..it's easy to make friends with all sorts of social types. It's cliche, but it's true, to make friends you'll definitely want to join clubs and get involved.

thanks, blaze. that was good to hear!
