ohh dude im thinking of applying to LAS for biochemical engineering, as my first choice, but i also said that if i didn't get into my first choice, that i would like to be considered for other schools and stuff. Also how important is the essay, and instead of filling out the gay activities list online, is there anyway i can just send them my resume and leave that nonsense blank?

Ah, the wonderful check-the-box! That thing seems amazing(too bad i'm already applying for LAS...)

As for the resume thing... hmm. From what i've heard, they look down upon any additional information sent in, anything out of THEIR ordinary...but i don't know. If it turns out you can, i'm totally jealous cause that thing was driving me crazy! Where you could only put, like, seven activities and all! Rrr.

And my conversation with an admissions counselor went as follows:
Me: Say, purely hypothetical, someone has below-your-standards grades. But they happen to write amazing essays. Can essays save an application?
Her:[noticeably searching for words] We use essays as a deciding factor. If it's a competetive school, or if you're on the edge, we look at the essays. They're IN ADDITION to everything else you have.

I take that as meaning; ...they mean close to nothing unless you're really an on-the-edge student.

You should be aware that chemical (including biochemical) engineering, though in LAS, follows the engineering college's criteria for admission, i.e., you need to be in the range of class rank/test score that the engineering college usually has. The writing portion of your SAT is not considered and thus your SAT score for admission is 1280, which combined with your top 13% class rank puts you somewhat below the middle 50% range for chemical engineering. You should consider admission to that program a reach. The back-up of possible admission to LAS generally is somewhat better. For any engineering program essays are important for any borderline candidate. As to applying by Nov 15, the priority date, understand that means you must get everything into their hands, including high school transcript and official test scores from the College Board by Nov 15 and thus you really need to order those sent fairly soon. You should put acitivities in the form and, if you want to say more, in one of your essays; sending a resume means it will be put in your file but may not be reviewed, particularly by reviewers who use the computer to review application info.
