Hi, I'm planning to apply to UMich next year. I've already taken a look at some other threads but still haven't really figured out what the "Honors" system is. Could someone describe that for me?

Looking to apply for engineering

Junior/Asian/California
1st generation to go to school in the USA

UW GPA: 3.65 (are there less academic classes like band that UMich does not count for the GPA?)

10th grade: Honors precalc, Honors eng, AP World history (3), Community college US history (counts as AP for UC's, probably honors-level for other schools)
11th grade: AP Phys C (probably 5 on mech., 4-5 on E&M), AP Calc BC (almost certain 5), AP Eng Lang. (haven't taken, probably 4-5)

Increasing GPA trend

SAT: 2100 1st time, retaking for a 2300+
SAT2: Math2c - 800, Phys - waiting on results (most likely around 750, retaking for 800)

ECs:
Active in 3 clubs (president of 2 of them)
marching band 4 years
piano 7 years - numerous finalist awards
Chinese school student council chair
Summer paid internship at a startup company

A 3.6 unweighed GPA is on the lower end of the Michigan range, but you have taken challenging classes such as AP Calc BC and AP Physics. Your SAT is solid. As it stands, I would say Michigan is a match.

I think your on the lower side of a match, near a slight reach. I was deferred before accepted and my ECs are better (multiple state/regional level awards) and I was in-state, and I had alumni status, with my GPA idential and similar SAT/ACT scores (I had a 3.65 UW + 32 ACT). Additionally a few of my friends were also deferred/accepted (and even one with a 3.7 UW + 33 ACT, waitlisted after being deferred). UMich is going to be a close call, so make sure you present yourself well and write good essays. Good luck
