Hey guys, I just finished applying to American and GWU for Spring '08. Ill be transferring in as a sophomore for that term. I'm looking at the School of International Services and the Elliott School of International Affairs but I'm not sure if I have the GPA to get in. I can't do too much to follow up so right now I am at the mercy of admissions. I have a 3.5 gpa. Is that way too low for both of these schools. I have to be honest, I want to go to GW more than AU but will consider AU if accepted. Please let me know what you think. If you need anymore info to judge my chances of acceptance, let me know.
ps: I know I should hear back from AU in a little over a month but how about GW? How long does it take?

Come on...anyone want to give me their honest opinion? I kept the message short for a reason; so that you won't have to read a book before answering me. Thanks!

3.5 seems to be the average for transfer students, so you have a shot. However, there are probably 2,000 other applicants with a 3.5 or higher, so you will need to have something in your application that stands out.

Do you have any idea how many applications are received and how many are accepted for the Elliott School? I suppose the only thing that sets me apart from most students is that I have my private pilots license and I'm Armenian by ethnicity.

*
Armenian as in you were born in Armenia or just that your family is originally from there? Because if it is the latter then it does not matter for GW, or any other school for that matter.
You can improve your chances by visiting/interviewing. They want to see applicant interest.

I do not know what Elliot's acceptance rate is for transfers. For freshmen, I have heard everything from 15% to 45%, so I do not know what to believe. I do know that the average SAT for Elliot is somewhere between 2000 and 2100.

Thanks for the response! Though I was told that they don't interview transfers I think I may schedule a campus visit anyway to show them that I am interested like you said. I was also told that SAT/ACT scores and a high school transcript is unnecessary in my case because I have over 30 credits. Correct me if I'm wrong. If I am wrong I'm screwed...well I'm screwed anyway because of my gpa but I'll be even more screwed if I need to send in my high school records.

Wait a second, I'm applying as a transfer as well, they never told me not to send in my h.s transcript and I have 50 credits??? Did u actually speak with an admissions rep. or those students who answer phone calls?

OOHH crap. I hope I'm right and you're wrong (in a friendly way). I have a load of questions to ask them so I'll ask then. Whats your gpa?

Hi,

I haven't worked in the admissions office for a couple of years now, but a 3.5 GPA sounds good as long as there isn't anything sketchy about the rest of your application / assuming you can write a decent essay. They also look for a good fit with the university -- as in, your interests, future goals, type of personality, etc.

D got accepted at AU as sophmore transfer with 3.47 GPA. They held the admissions decision until spring grades were in so she would have 28 credits - thus she did not have to submit SAT/ACT scores. I think she did send HS transcript. (I do believe you still have to submit SAT for GW transfer).

With the 3.5 you and some other things that make you 'interesting' you should get in....but you will not get much financial aid. (My D couldn't go because the FA was so low) I do not know for sure, only from reading comments on CC - I believe the $ for transfers is better at GWU.

If you can pay, then you should be okay...good luck!
