Chances Please!!

Hello everyone, i recently started checking out UVA, in fact I will be there in a week, i really love the school but the whole out of state thing worries me... a lot

Location: Large Public High School in SC 2300 + students

Ethnicity: Indian

GPA/Rank: 4.0 UW and 5.1 W Rank 3/510
I will have taken 14 AP's by graduation.

SAT/SAT II's:

This is my weakest part of the application and I know will be the decider, just like the other kid on this forum.

SAT: 1320/1980 - I am going to take one more time, but I like to expect the worse

SAT II's: 760 - US History, 710 Biology

Extra-curriculars: (strongest part of my application)

*I am the Youth Governor of South Carolina's Youth In Government Program, i serve over 1200 students all over the state and I have made significant changes to the program that will last throughout the program.

*Speech and Debate, I served last year as Captain of the largest team in SC, winning 3 state championships. I won 1 state championship this past year and I have qualified to the National Forensic League Nationals 2 times in a row.

*Boy Scouts, I am currently working on my Eagle Project in order to attain my Eagle Badge. I am working with the Red Cross, running a community-wide drive to collect stuff for "care-packages"
As a Boy Scout I am currently serving as a Den Chief, i go to Cub-Scout meetings and lead a Den every Monday, I also served as several leadership positions in my troop.

*Youth Leadership Greenville, A selective leadership program that lasted 1 year, i recently graduated, it is run by the Chamber of Commerce.

*Vision 2020 for Science, A selective group of students were chosen to design a state of the art science facility in our community, the project will be completed in December, and we all get scholarships along with it.

Beta Club and National Honors Society - Basic service and volunteer clubs, nothing important.

Basically with my EC's i like to stress Leadership and Service in everything I have done in high school, all my activities represent that. And as a leader, I go beyond serving, I try to implement changes that last.

As you can see my EC's and GPA/Rank are good but my SAT 1320 is what I am really worried about. Does anyone have any comments, or anything that will be of benefit to me, thanks a lot.

you sound so strong, yet the discrepancy between your good grades and mediocre standardized tests are probably an issue. were you born here?

yea i was, im just not a good standardized test taker, im workin on it this summer, but sometimes its good to expect the worst with my sat...

are you taking a good prep class, ie Princeton Review?

i mean i did kaplan last year, it wasn't too beneficial, what has been working have been practice tests, thats how i got the 1320, im taking a lot now, and yes improving, but i have sooo much bad luck on test day, i'll have great practice test scores and choke!!! it has nothing to do with my skills, i've been averaging 730 in math, but there are those occasionaly outliers that i do really really bad, thats what happens on test days, so i try to expect the worse

"you sound so strong, yet the discrepancy between your good grades and mediocre standardized tests are probably an issue. were you born here?"

What are you taking about collegemom? They are entirely different things. You can have a class rank of 1/500 and still have a bad sat score.

does anyone kno the middle 50 percent sat scores for out of state, the admissions guy told me to add 30 points to each tail end for the overall one, but i think he was just lying, it doesnt make too much sense.

Take the ACT. My SAT scores weren't the best, but I guess they were good enough, since I got in to UVA!--But, I took them 3 times, sweated each time, and prepared at home with self-help books a lot.
I really wish I had taken the ACT early, but by the end of the 3rd SAT, I was so burned out that I couldn't take another test if my life depended on it. (not really, but sort of).
The SAT test is garbage, and most schools secretly acknowledge that. Take the ACT.

I totally agree with jimmyjam on this one. Take the ACT. My SATs were just okay by CC standards but my ACT was much better. try it out.

either way, you have a decent shot.

nmehta4: don't know the average, but at an info session they said OOS applicants generally are in the upper 25% overall. Of course, there are always exceptions...
