[ *] major strength/weakness:

If I were you, I'd consider applying RD if you think you can improve your application (slightly higher SAT score and class rank)...OOS competition is looking to be extremely stiff this year. Then again, I'd like to emphasize that UNC looks at the WHOLE application, if they like your recs/essays in admissions, there's still a definite possibility of you getting in.

I'd work hard to take the essays from "pretty good" to "great" first and foremost since UNC really takes the essays very seriously. Very strong essays could be a mitigating factor for other things. Next, work to get the SATs up a bit, and finally, following phonyreal's advice, apply RD.

As a female your odds are perhaps a bit longer since the 60/40 female to male ratio can sometimes help a more marginal male applicant so you need to do all you can to strengthen the weaker areas of your application.

Please understand that I am not saying that you are a "weak" applicant in general because that is just not the case. In all honesty the biggest weakness I see is the SAT scores (1310 old score) to illustrate, my D had a 1350 with a 3.83 and had a brother already at UNC and was turned down.

So once again I will tell you.....REALLY work on your essays and if you can get the SAT to a little over 1400 it should help your cause.

Admission to UNC for an OOS student is oftentimes more competitive than at many Ivies and other highly select private schools and with the increased applications this year the bar will more likely than not be raised even higher making the selection process even more competitive.
