thanks!

what's your ethnicity? honors and awards? family legacy?

Ethnicity: Indian
-No family legacy: I'm first generation
-I come from a brand new school in a very new city where there aren't many opportunities for awards and internships and stuff.

GPA - Unweighted: 3.95
GPA - Weighted: 4.05

Also, sorry if "I'd say my essays are good - better than most apps I'd say." comes off as arrogant, I'm just trying to say they're better than average: like 7/10.

Scores could be a little higher. ECs are kinda average. You need to find some way to show passion in something.

Are you planning on taking the Sats over again?............a 1380/1600 is a little low for columbia.....

The stats on its website says the middle 50 percent scored a 1470, the bottom 25 percent scored a 1400, and the top 75 percent scored a 1540..........its going to be hard......

Your class rank is good though, so you definitly have a shot..........My application is completly different I have a 1470 reading and math, but I go to a compeitive high school so my rank is only top 20 percent..........my gpa is a 93/100 (unweighted) and a 3.8 (unweighted)....

Good Luck....

thanks for the replies

Unfortunatley, 1380 was my third time... :( I probably shouldnt take it again
Here's how I see it:

the "lower" IVYs: columbia, cornell, brown, dartmouth accept kids from competitive high schools who have high scores but lesser ranks. The upper IVYs and friends: Stanford, MIT, Yale, Princeton take only the best of the best.

does that sound about right?

I don't know, even some of the "lesser ivys" are big on class rank, these schools have over 20,000 applicants (most have applicants with the same stats), so in order to be admitted you have to be the best......

Even these "lesser ivys" are not easy to get into........., you have to have a college hook, have good essays, a good class rank, and good Sat Scores......

^^^^Thats what the columbia conselor said when I called..

I don't really consider Columbia to be a "lesser ivy..."

That aside, the fact that you're Asian makes it a lot more competitive for you. SAT scores are a tad low, esp. critial reading, which isn't even in the mid 50% range. However, that alone shouldn't be detrimental.

You don't have any awards?? It doesn't have to be anything major. Try to get something -- even publishing an article in your school newspaper. Just don't leave the section blank.

Make sure your essay is really hard to forget. And do well on the interview (if you get one).

If you have, you might want to consider art/music/science supplements.

i'd bet on you getting in

^lol thanks?

@^_~
I thought I might be considered a minority, which might give me a better chance.
Do they categorize indians with asians?

No considerable awards unfortunately...I come from a brand new school and we don't have established awards-like shananigans.

Well I do have one:
I was nominated the school faculty for the American Legion Boys' State (5 total were nominated out of like 200).
Would this count?
I also have little stuff honor roll and athlete of the week/month for sports.
Are these of any good?

^ Indians a minority? Come on!

oh really? haha
I never quite understood what a minority is defined as.
Anyone care to explain?

well for college app purposes, indians do not count as minority. turns out indians/chinese work hard as hell for admission to the top schools. just so you know.
