Thanks again!!!

I find it hard to imagine that you would get in with that ACT/SAT from OOS.

I think you sound very interesting; did you take Japanese at your high school? I also see you have attended some summer programs and have worked at a job and play the oboe in the orchestra. You are in the top 10% of your class and 3.9 W is a high GPA.
And you are Hispanic which is a nice diversity thing.

What science courses did you take; how many years of a foreign language; and what non honors Math classes did you take?

I am not concerned about your ACT -- 29 and 30 are in the 96% per centile, I think.

I would be more concerned with what classes you took.

Unlike the previous poster, I find it hard to predict your chances; you sound like someone who is very involved and have a lot to offer a community.

"What science courses did you take"
I've taken Honors Int. Science 9, Honors Bio 10, AP Bio 11, and the only full science class offered in 12, Physics.

"how many years of a foreign language"
I'm currently in Advanced French, and I've taken 5 years(Because 8th grade French is not normally available, those who are accepted into the middle school program receive high school credit).
I was given special acceptance into Japanese 101 at Cleveland State through the PSEOP program.

"what non-honors Math classes did you take?"
I took Algebra I and Geometry I, both non-honors.

Senior Classes: Orchestra, Physics, Yearbook, Advanced French, Pre-calculus, Government (no honors/AP available =/ ), Wind Ensemble.

Thanks!!! =)

Is there anything in particular that W&M likes to see?

Your strengths definitely lie in your ECs. Highlight your commitment, it is one of your strengths. It looks like you have done a lot with the arts over a long time, have done a lot with summer programs, have done a lot with sports, and have done a lot with volunteering.

And yeah, don't send those SATs...but your ACT is in the middle of the 4% who sent their ACTs in past years.

good ECs

SATs are not good, but you aren't sending them. I think the ACT score is ok. Your AP scores are on the low side, and I don't know if not taking Calc will hurt you.

hispanic will count to your advantage.

Okay, four years of science; three of Math including Pre-Cal; 5 years of a foreign language.

What is your supplement like?

"It's not hard to look at a student's application and determine whether they're smart and willing enough to keep up at William and Mary. There's a baseball analogy in the committee for this: "all bases covered." In admission baseball, there are five bases: biology, chemistry, physics, calculus and four to five years of a foreign language."

Quote from: https://alumni.wm.edu/magazine/spgsum_2007/feature_5.shtml

You're missing calculus. That does hurt your chances, especially as an out-of-stater. Your test scores are low for OOS as well. You don't have the best chances, but I've known less likely candidates who've made it.

True, but she acknowledges math is not a strength and chemistry and calculus are math-oriented; she does have pre-cal (if you start Algebra in 9th grade, most folks do not get to Calculus by 12th, and we do not know if Algebra was available at her middle school or if she placed in it) and physics, biology, and not only French but some Japanese. Her oboe, piano, and flute talents are very appealing, and everyone knows that an orchestra is always in need of an oboe player.

OP: I would contact W&M's music dept and check in with the prof who conducts orchestra and make sure he or she knows that you play the oboe and have experience as first chair.

And work on the supplement.

No one can predict and the process seems random at times, but I think you sound like a really interesting, involved person. Keep us posted.

You can also do a special arts submission (info here: William & Mary - Arts Submissions), which I strongly recommend if you have the time to get it together before the deadline. The admissions dept. will forward your submission to a member of the music department, who will evaluate you relative to other student musicians at W & M and then send the eval back to admissions. If you've recorded any music, you can put a submission together rather quickly - it doesn't have to be a flashy presentation.

On the five bases: My d, who is OOS, was accepted with no physics at all and only 4 years of Latin. She took honors bio, then honors chem, then AP Chem, and finished with AP Bio. Our hs has serious issues with its physics teachers, and my d was genuinely more attracted to AP Chem and Bio, so she decided to pursue the subjects of interest to her. I think it's helpful to know that the adcoms are looking for those bases to be covered, but it's not a hard and fast rule.
