Chances Please! :)

White female, originally born in the Slovak Republic, moved to the United States (New York specifically) when I was 6 years old. My parents are divorced. I plan to major in International Relations, a concentration in either Middle Eastern or Eastern European studies, and plan to take Arabic and/or continue French. Applying from a Jesuit Prep School in New York City to which I have a $30,000/year merit scholarship (not bragging, really.)

Standardized Test Scores:

SAT: 2020 (March 2009; I took it again this morning and think I did significantly better)
Math: 630
Writing: 750 (Essay: 12)
Reading: 640
SAT II's: Definitely taking United States History in June (taking the AP test on Friday), will probably take English Lit and one of the Maths. My French teacher has also suggested that I take the French SAT II.
GPA: (my school grades on a 0-100 scale) Had consistent 96-97 averages the first 2 years, 94 this year (Junior year)
Rank: My school does not rank (again haha) but I am definitely in the top 5/58
AP Euro: 3 (I KNOW I KNOW!!!!)

Awards:

First Honors (90 or above in every class) since Freshman year

Extracurricular:

Brownbaggers Community Service Program (making and delivering lunches to homeless in NYC) - Freshman
Literary Magazine (nationally recognized) - Freshman
JV Volleyball - Freshman, Sophomore
Maroon & Gold (basically I served as a student ambassador when there were events at my school) - Freshman, Sophomore, Junior
Chorus (currently taking as a Junior elective) - Freshman, Sophomore, Junior
Peer Tutoring - Sophomore, Junior
Amnesty International - Sophmore
Eucharistic Minister - Junior
Math League - Junior
Art (currently taking as a Junior elective as well) - Junior
Liturgical Singer - Junior
School Newspaper (Production Editor this year; will take on role of Editor-in-Chief for next year) - Junior
Speech Team (my school doesn't have a debate portion of the team... so sad. Didn't make states but I came EXTREMELY close - it came down to speaking points!) - Junior

Community Service:

I'm really big on community service. Sophomore year I went on a volunteer service trip to Camden, New Jersey for a weekend, and repeated that experience this year as well. I also went on a week-long trip this year to Robbins, Tennessee to work with Habitat for Humanity Appalachia. I tutor young children in Harlem weekly at the Association to Benefit Children, and previously did community service in Soup Kitchens.

Schedule:

For Freshman to Junior year, my school follows a core curriculum of English, Math, Science, Language, a Fine Art Class (Music Freshman, Art Sophomore... no art in Junior year but I opted to take both Chorus and Studio Art as an elective), Theology, History, and a Computer Science class Freshman year, Health class Sophomore year, and Speech class Junior year. This year I has English 3 Honors, Precalc Honors, Honors Physics, AP US, and French 3 - the hardest classes I could possibly take. Next year, we have a limit to 4 AP's (my school's really bad when it comes to AP's) so I am taking AP Stats, AP English, AP Bio, and AP French. I am also getting special permission to take Political Science and Economics from the administration, as we are not allowed to take more than 4 classes if they are all AP's.

Summer Plans:
I worked as a Dental Receptionist last year (during school year as well) and I am doing the Yale Summer Session this year, taking Intro to International Relations and Political Philosophy. I am also doing an internship with a NYC law office (since I wanted to get a taste of it and see if I would want to take a Law path when it comes to college)

Recently, my grades have dropped (particularly Math... went from a 98 last year to and 85 this year... so sad!) due to financial reasons (not using this as an excuse) and family problems that were kind of tough on me, so my teachers know about that but they can't really give me the benefit of the doubt. I have already started writing my essay for college and I'm really excited for it! But yeah, my top choice is Yale and I do understand that is a reach. I also plan on applying to Brown, UPenn, BC, Georgetown (not sure if SFS or the regular college would be good for me), Lehigh University, George Washington University, Loyola College in Maryland, and NYU. :) Thanks and please be honest! I won't be disappointed, I know a few of the colleges I listed are reaches when it comes to my stats!

BUMP

Sorry, I just wanted to ask if SCEA or RD for Yale would probably be better for me when applying and also if colleges really would take notice of the fact that I took AP Stats in lieu of AP Calc this year (not exactly good at Precalc, so Calc would just be a nightmare!!)

Thanks again  If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Sorry the post couldn’t have been more organized, I generally am a very organized person!

BUMP

Come on guys :frowning: Feeling lonely here…

I think you’d have a decent chance at most of them…
But they would all be reach-high reach type schools…
It all seems kinda up in the air though… you’ll have to wait and see how the rest of your scores come out…
(and that really sucks about your school limiting the amount of AP classes you can take… I know there are kids out there taking 12-13 over their high school years- even in 9th grade  )

I’m going to focus on Georgetown bc that’s my #1 choice and I know the most about it haha. I would say that if you raise those SAT’s to at least above 2100 and hopefully over 2200 you have a much better shot. And as far as SFS vs. regular college goes, if you’re at all unsure then I would apply to the regular school, the SFS is very focused and it’s kind of hard to get out of that track once you’re on it. Good luck!

Congrats on the 12 on the SAT Essay very rare. I think you have a decent chance in getting into your schools. I know all about the AP class limitation deal if I had the choice I was just going skip the college prep and take all AP’s. Keep working hard not much longer : ) .

Thanks guys! Yeah, my school’s very limiting on all of us - I think the maximum number of classes that anyone could take is 6 and that’s the amount that I’ll be taking over the 4 years… it sucks :frowning: But thanks! And ahh Mvingi, my good friend goes there - I’ve visited so many times I love Georgetown! But yes, definitely working on those SAT’s - if anything that would only give me a leg up! Thanks though!

At this point, I’m taking my Yale on-campus interview this summer and I’m probably applying SCEA only because I would kick myself over the head wondering “What if?” if I didn’t!

I know Georgetown doesn’t count sat writing scores which is a bummer for you, sorry. So you really need to get the Cr and M up a lot! Yale, Upenn and Brown are probably reaches, but they basically are for everybody. The other schools are within range easily. So keep your gpa up, and really try to get some scores up by studying over the summer.

chance me back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/733304-chance-schools.html

Thanks! I know, I’m so upset about the Writing section of the SAT thing - my friend always makes fun of me for it… I retook the SAT and did better in Math and CR (660 in each) which is still not amazing but I’m studying for the ACT and SAT right now before I go to Yale for the summer. I’m also teaching myself German (my mom used to be a German teacher) so I’m excited about that… I already started work on my essay even though I keep revising the beginning… I need like a solid beginning to get anything started, even though I’m a pretty good writer!
