Chances please?

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to tell me if I have a chance at getting into the University of MD...

I am a rising senior planning to apply...I am from Potomac, Maryland (right outside of DC). I attend a highly ranked public school which I have been told can be a plus, not so sure though. These are my stats....

UWGPA:3.66
WGPA: 4.14
ACT: 22 composite with an 11 out of 12 on the essay, 24 composite with no essay
SAT: 1630 (retaking)

197 community service hours
Rowing Club: 9,10,11 (in-charge of recruitment)
Class Planning: 9,10,11 (an officer of the executive board)
National Honor Society: 11 (junior officer)
Red Cross Club: 9,10,11
Community Serice Club: 9,10,11
Total of 6 AP classes: Psychology, Human Geography, Enviormental Science, Literature, Language, Photography

Summer '09---I am leaving in a week to build houses in New Orleans, LA. I also work at a local ice cream shop.

Summer '08---I participated in a 3 week volunteer program in Olympic National Park where I worked on trail restoration and development.

Your SAT scores are going to be the issue for you. UMD is very numbers-based…GPA, SAT, class rank. You should apply, but you’re on the low end of SAT #'s.

Also, I assume your school offers AP calculus, physics, and chemistry? They DO look at whether you’ve taken the most challenging courses available to you, and even though you have 6 AP classes (which is great, and scores of 4 and 5 will give you valuable credit), they aren’t considered the “tough” ones. (Bummer, but I know that this was one of the factors that they specifically considered for my younger D).

You should definitely apply after you try to get your CR and M SAT scores UP. I don’t think you should consider UMD-CP as a safety, however.

Since you’re instate, and your GPA is high I would say you’re in. But you might not make honors because of your SAT score. My friend had a 1350 (out of 2400) and got in, and her GPA was around a 3.95 and she’s in scholars so I would say you’re in.

I would say that your ACT, SAT will be a big spotlight, also the Aps you are taking are not ones that are typically seen as hardcore. Human Geography or Photography will not be put in the same column as a student who took USH and Gov.

I am with astro on this one, if you are not taking the most rigorous course load than I would not put UMDCP as a safety. It could be a match if you are looking for an LA major

Sports I am surprise that your friend had 1350 out of 2400 and is in scholars, especially since you get 600 for filling in your name properly. Plus the avg SAT and gpa for Scholars is 1300 out of 1600 and a 3.4 uw. Her gpa had to be uw at 3.95 for them to accept her in scholars.

It is just the beginning of the application process, take a deep breath and some time. The best resume will get you in, throwing in your name won’t. Remember as the economy continues to tank more kids will place in-state schools into their apps, the colleges have limited numbers, the more that apply does not equate into more accepted, typically it equates into mpore rejections. 2008 they had 28K apps, 2009 it was 29K apps.

Not to be a downer, just a reminder to keep taking the SAT/ACT in the fall since they superscore. Work on the essay now when you have no homework and polish it in the fall when school is back in. Ask for people on this board to read it through pm’s. They will be your harshest critics, not like the folks or your English teacher.

Good luck! GO TERPS!
