just let me know what you think!

Hey! I’m from Charlotte, and headed off to the U in the fall. Good to see someone else from around here.

Your extracurriculars are great. I don’t know how your school weights, but your weighted GPA seems a little low. Class rank is good, but definitely try and keep your grades up first semester. If you get postponed or haven’t heard back by semester’s end, send in your first semester transcript, especially if it boosts your GPA and/or class rank. Definitely retake the SAT, and maybe consider the ACT – I didn’t take the ACT at all, just sent SAT scores, but the admissions office is definitely more familiar with the ACT and, besides, you might do better on the ACT. I know a lot of kids at my school took the ACT after getting disappointing SAT scores because they said it was easier, and their scores were a lot better (according to estimated equivalencies). I think it’s just a matter of opinion.

I think your chances are decent for Carlson. Definitely do everything you can to boost your stats – your extracurriculars, like I said, are great. Lots of leadership and initiative, which is good. But the average Carlson admit last year had a 1300/1600 and was in the top 10%, so your stats are a little weak. But definitely apply, as early as possible, and I hope you end up coming to the U!

(And just a note, if you take the SAT in October, it took my scores until November 7th to get there, so my application wasn’t complete until then. So the “apply early” advice won’t really work out too well for you – but honestly, if you can improve your scores, it’s worth it to wait. Mine went up 120 points – I’m glad I waited.)

Silversaline is spot on. The only thing I could add is given that you are out of state, your chances may be better than someone in-state with similar stats. If I were you, I would apply.

thanks for the great adivce you two! i really appreciate it!

Better apply early. I got rejected OOS to even the CLA after being waitlisted with a 1970 SAT/28 ACT & 3.77 unweighted GPA.

i got into carlson with 1320/1600 SAT and 31 ACT. my ec are not as great as yours and my gpa is not as high either. i did’t have any particular hooks, i did get a lot of awards for science olympiad and i was the officer of a few clubs, nothing extraordinary. and from what i saw at orientation, most of the carlson kids had similar stats as mine.

you have a very good shot at Carlson. i would say 90% and don’t worry if you get defered or postponed, most students do.

apply early like everyone said and do the ‘optional’ essay.

Ummm, I’m gonna have to disagree and say I would be suprised if you got in. For OOS publics your stats are by far the most important and for you right now, they are not up to par for Carlson.
