Chances? please!

-in state
-private day school (dual-curriculim)
-3.79 GPA
-ACT: (in order of having taken them) 24, 25, will take in Sept, I'm hoping for at least a 28.
-2 AP's (APUSH, 4; Lang, 5)
-4 honors classes
-EC's: president of community/school service club, on varsity girls soccer team all 4 years, NHS, school ambassador club, eco team, two conferences, school literary newspaper and weekly newsletter contributor, writer for teen section of local paper, etc.
-will have 60 hours of community service by the end of senior year
-summer/work exp: fellow in a genealogy program after 9th grade, same summer job after 10th and 11th grade

-I'll probably be getting a pretty good reccomendation, and my essays are great (2/3 are stellar, one needs a little work.)

I know that the thing I need to strengthen (and that I can at this point) is my ACT. I know that they hardly consider you without at least a 27-28.

(also, is there anything else they consider that i should include here?)

Thanks.

ALSO: In the chance that I get deffered (and I hate to speculate about this!), I know that they will look at my first semester grades of senior year. Right now I'm slated to take two AP courses for senior year- will these be to my advantage IF they need to look at my grades to decide to accept me? Or would I just be working hard unnecessarily hard my senior year?

Your GPA is good, but your ACT score is sort of a problem. I would say that at the moment Michigan is a reach for you unless you get your ACT up. If you fall within the 27-31 range, then Michigan is a match for you.

Michigan looks at an applicant holistically. One factor won’t be detrimental. With that being said, study hard and do well on your ACTs. Your extra curricular activities are average. The rigor of your course load is also average. I’d say work on your essays. Recommendations are out of your hands. You never know if you counselor writes the stellar recommendation that you were hoping for.

Think positive and Good Luck!

Hope you have good school spirit!

thanks, I do hope you’re right, that if I can work on my ACTs and essays I’ll get in. Thanks! good luck to you too.

How many total AP and honors classes are offered at your school? When I went on my tour, the admissions officer told me that the rigor of your curriculum within the context of your school is really important. But yeah, right now I pretty much agree with everything Entertainer said.

Well I think the rigor of your course load includes all types of courses. Mainly honors and above. You don’t have to take all the AP’s in the world to have taken a rigorous course load. Anything above honors is fine. I know someone who got into Ivy League schools, but she only took 2 AP’s out of the 15 or so that our school offers. 4 honors classes seems a bit low though in my opinion. I must have overlooked that. I hope the 4 honors classes is for your senior year because then that would mean you took standard courses throughout high school. You have to look at yourself in context with what your school offers like Yosup said.

Mid year grades are very important. I think that is one of the reason I got into Michigan in the first place. My grades were below average(U-M GPA) and so were my SAT scores. I sent them my SAT II scores, which were good and I sent them my mid year grades. My senior year GPA came out to be a 4.4W or so. So it definitely showed them that I could do better. My course load was rigorous in my opinion. 3 AP’s, 20 or so Honors classes and 2 Advanced courses(Greater than Honors) I was always in an honors class(meaning all the courses available for honors and above). I’m trying to convey that Rigor + GPA + are two of the most important factors in terms of admission. SAT is very important, but not to the extent that GPA and Rigor are.

According to you I should have been rejected* 23 ACT here. Its not that they don’t consider you. You can’t be rejected because of one deficiency. Like I said Michigan reviews applicants holistically. The way they review applicants is available on the Michigan website.

You are also in state so you have better chances than out of state students. By the way is that GPA your cumulative, or is it the U-M recalculated GPA? U-M only takes your sophomore and junior year grades.

Right now I’d say Reach, but if you get your ACT up, i’d say Match*

Well, you can’t take AP classes at my school until 11th grade, and unless you get specific permission you cannot take more than four AP classes per year. The ones offered each year (it’s changed a bit for this coming year but last year matters for me):
AP Lit & Lang- every other year (for example, lang was offered last year and lit is offered this year)
chem and bio- every other year (for this year both are offered but science isn’t my strong point so I would never have taken either)
physics (b and c or whatever they’re called.)
gov and american history- every other year
calc BC

Honors classes offered at my school- In 9th grade: science, math if placed in geometry
10th: english, history, math, science
11th: english, math, science
12th: same as directly above

Also, as I mentioned my school is a private day school and we have a dual curriculum where we are required to have 8 religious studies credits upon graduation. I know that this is taken into account at UofM, that we are required to take extra classes that public/even private schools are not.
Oh, and I will have also taken the same language for all four years.

Oh ok thanks for clearing that up. Your courses look good.

Only thing holding you back is the ACT.

Yeah get your ACT up and you should be okay. What college are you applying to btw?

And to answer your last question: Your senior courses are taken into account even when you first apply, not just if you’re differed. So yeah I’d keep those AP classes to show colleges you’re continuing to challenge yourself, and not slack off. Unless of course you think they will be too hard, then you’re probably better off taking easier courses. Challange yourself, but don’t sacrifice your grades.

you mean what other colleges? probably just u of m-dearborn. my parents have basically said that I can’t go out of state because it’s too expensive nowadays. so IF (and I will get accepted, because I will get my ACTs up. talking to myself here…) I’m rejected, I’ll probably go there for a year and then transfer, because i hear that unless you fail you’re almost gauranteed you can transfer to ann arbor from any of the other u of m schools. But that’s a huge IF. ;-)

i’m not applying to msu because i know i would never attend. it’s a great school, just not the place for me at all.

I think yosup was asking what college you are applying to (ie LS&A, Engineering, Kinesiology, Music, etc…) at U-M Ann Arbor.

Reach… ACT is too low. even a 28 won’t cut it. you need to shoot for a 30+.

I’m applying to LS&A.
