Hook?: I am know/work with a pretty famous architect who is an alumni of Columbia and is friends with the admissions officer. Trying to get him to write me a recomendation. (Was able to get one of his god-sons in last year)

looks pretty good overall if your essay is about EMT, Boy Scouts or your work experience. apply ED if you can for a better shot.

Well, I am writing my essay on running and how disipline from distance running has helped me through boy scouts, getting eagle, and trying to become an emt. The only thing i am concerned about is my sats...

your grades seem to be a little low, because a 4.1 or 4.3/5 is not stellar. The architect thing could give you an edge though.

thats absurd, his grades are fine, we don't all go to schools with absurd grade inflation, for all we know, he could be attending a very competetive school

I said they were 'a little low'... i did not speculate on the strenght of his school. My point is, and it is in no way absurd, that a 4.1-4.3/5 is a little low for Columbia. Obviously they have and will continue to take people with lower gpa's than that. My point is that the typical Columbia admit probably has a GPA more in the 4.7-5.0 range. I meant to imply nothing more nor did i mean to be absurd.

SAMTROB, unless you are speaking from experience, don't comment on average GPA for acceptances.

I had a 3.8 UW and a 4.3 W and I got in. Most of my new friends were generally in the same area.

Let this be a lesson to all applying to Ivies...you don't need a 5.0 and amazing EC's. They accept normal kids, really, honestly. Just do your best and not worry about things like a .4 increase in GPA.

Best of luck to you enzo...you seem to be a qualified comment.

Thank you for your thoughts. I just have to say that gpa inflation is almost nonexistant at my school. I think the highest gpa in my grade is a 4.3 overall. The school is not that competive but there are many mandatory classes that arent weighted.

the typical columbia admit doesn't have a 4.7 XD

At my school you couldn't get that with all A+s in every class. I had 4.33 and graduated salutatorian
