(also 9th grade was still in the jr. high for me, which is why I wasn't as involved then)

Demonstrated interest: Visited this summer

I am also from Minnesota which is kind of out of the norm for Emory

According to a college guide that I read last year, the following factors are considered by the Emory admissions committee:

Very important factors considered:
Application essay
Academic GPA
Recommendation(s)
Rigor of secondary school record
Standardized test scores
Extracurricular activities

Important factors considered:
Character/personal qualities
Level of applicant’s interest
Talent/ability

Other factors considered:
Class rank
Alumni/ae relation
First generation
Geographical residence
Racial/ethnic status
State residency
Volunteer work
Work experience

Emory academic profile of admitted students:
Academics - Admitted Students
Average GPA, middle 50% 3.71 - 3.98 / 4.0 unweighted scale
SAT verbal, middle 50% 640–730
SAT math, middle 50% 660–750
SAT total, middle 50% 1320–1460
ACT, middle 50% 29–33

Your GPA and ACT are within the middle 50%, and your ECs are very good. Sounds like you have an excellent teacher rec. Your essay seems like it will be spot on, and if you don’t think that it’s well-written, you can show it to your GC for some feedback. Your visit last summer shows demonstrated interest (as long as Emory knows you visited). I would say: match. Emory and you are a good fit.

Thanks a lot! My essay isn’t poorly written, but it’s nothing super stand out, I guess would be the best way to put it. We did them in Honors English 11 and so it is edited well and everything, but the topic “describe a valuable life experience and how it made you who your are” is pretty generic. I did about my little cousins brain tumor, and how it taught me understanding of others, compassion in life, and how you have to fight for anything worth having.

Good luck, even though you probably won’t need it! Also, I hope that your cousin is okay.

Our stats are pretty similar and I got in ED1 so I think you should be fine. Goodluck :)
