Chances - Pomona, CMC, Oxy

So I'm a senior and I've already applied to Pomona, Claremont McKenna and Occidental, but the wait and speculation is driving me crazy. I was hoping someone could tell me what I might expect in my mailbox in a month or so!

CMC Class of 2018 student here.

Your thread was already shining up until I read “my dad went to Pomona for two years” and “I’m part Native American.” All of a sudden I felt like I was reading gold.

Oxy - Safety
Pomona - High Match
CMC - High Match

Again, you have a great shot at all of these schools. The only way I could see you getting rejected is if your writing supplements just turn out to be horrendous. Supplements can really make or break admission to top LACs.

Best of luck and I hope to see you around next year if accepted.

Your SAT score is far lower than the traditional legacy applicant (average around 2280 or so). And only 20-25% of legacies are admitted.

Even if you’re Native American, Pomona has historically low acceptance rates for URMs. I know for blacks it’s around 20-21% and for Hispanics its around 17%. So not too much higher than the normal acceptance rate.

A 600 Math really hurts…less than 5% of the enrolled students have that, and they tend to make up for it in their other scores or rank. The admitted pool is even more selective. Furthermore, you’re not in the top 20% of your class- only 3.3% of the enrolled students were in the 20-30% of their class.

I don’t know- I think Pomona is definitely a reach- a high one too. Is there not any way you could get that math score up?

@nostalgicwisdom, I’m painfully aware I’m not in the top 20% of my class. I feel as though my class rank is skewed because of the sheer number of valedictorians and salutatorians, so I guess all I can do is hope my grades speak louder than my class rank. As for my math score, I took it twice with the exact same result. I can’t afford a class or a tutor. So I feel like the answer to your question is probably no. I’m hoping I’m not coming off as snippy or rude, I appreciate your honesty!

@nostalgicwisdom

OP stated that she’s already applied. She’ll be finding out in the coming weeks. Her stats are locked.

But out of curiosity, where did you get your numbers for URM admissions from?

Freshespresso- I understand. I wish you all the best with the process. Hopefully Pomona will see through these things and consider you as holistically as possible!
