ACT:24, right now. 27, when i retake it in september.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure to be honest. Could go either way. You're getting in PSU for sure, but whether or not you get into University Park depends on your major.

You'd probably get into Liberal Arts or maybe Smeal, but not sure about Engineering.

If you were in state i'd say absolutely! But oos is impossibleeeeeee. because half of all the high schools anyway from PA go to penn state, so they have significantly less room for oos (btw...the half of high school thing is exaggerated...but my class of 300 in our schoool, 70 are going to psu main campus. =-O)

not accurate, I know people with much lower stats from oos who got in. The fact that you are a minority (assuming this from the japanese classes) might actually help.

half a brain? Hmm...PSU was more selective than that this past year. Kid in our neighborhood was deferred with a 3.5 and 1300 (from Smeal). Applied in Sept. Didn't want to go to a satellite so he's off to another school. Not sure how it will go for this admissions cycle.
I do agree that there's no difference between in state and out of state.
Bring that ACT score up since your GPA is right on the borderline.

It's not easy to get in out of state, but not impossible. Hell, we let in people that don't know how to spell definitely. Tomatoking, you need to get your act up. You will have a really good shot if you get that score up.

Sorry to break it to you, but Michigan isn't anywhere near 47%. Just keep scrolling for a while until you start seeing the 60s.

Tomatoking, you also want to come and visit with the admissions office. They are often really helpful and can tell you whether, based on your grades and scores, you should apply to start in the fall or summer.

Btw, can you explain why I didn't get into UM LSA as a freshman, while I got into PSU Smeal's sapphire program when PSU is harder to get into than UMich?

I'm sorry, but I don't want to pay over 32K for a school that has no international reputation or prestige.

The reason I brought the NYU/UChicago acceptance rate question is because that data you showed doesn't tell you the whole picture. The average applicant to UChicago is much more qualified than the average applicant to NYU. Its the same for PSU and UMich. Also, PSU's undergrad population is only slightly more than UM's, but gets tons more applications than UM (UM gets around 28-29K while PSU got over 95K). Any person with half a brain could figure out that PSU's acceptance rate will appear lower than UM's.

Now I would appreciate if you would stop wasting space on this wonderful forum.

There are many students at Penn UP that are strong - including close to 2000 honors students. And many of the rest are good students - you are biased because you hate the party scene. Drunk kids do act stupid but that doesn't mean that they ARE stupid (just go hang out at a place like Duke to find out what I mean).
Umich is a good school - perhaps better than PSU- but no that's no reason to bash PSU and degrade the students who go there. I know plenty of accomplished grads. Just admit it wasn't a good fit for you. My son goes there. He's smart and he loves it. And he has lots of smart friends.

Okay, I'm coming "out of retirement" for this one, if only to back up toneranger.

30 of sons friends chose PSU the year he did. They were all his AP classmates
and friends. Most of the smartest kids in this suburban HS chose PSU-UP. Son and one other student were accepted to honors. Most did not apply for honors as they had no interest. All are returning for sophomore year and all had a great time at PSU (although he did not see most of these kids all year as there are 40,000 people there). These were most of our HS's best and brightest and all around normal, good kids and yes, they drink and party, too.

Son had spent the summer up at PSU doing paid research in a lab thats part of a program rated somewhere in the top ten in the states. He lives in an apt. that has seen kids in and out as they do summer school, grad work and research work. Many have been international grad students. He presently works in a lab that is very diverse internationally and has met and works with some astounding grads and post grads. His freshman friend stayed at PSU this summer until he found a research position and now is doing research with NASA. Two freshman spending their summer at PSU instead of on CC arguing about what school will give them the best shot in life.Doing...not talking.
PSU has everything a student needs if that student is willing to find it and work his butt off.

PSU is a great school. Son could have gone to cornell, swarthmore or Duke but he chose PSU. Smart kid....smart choice.
