Exchange Program
I will be spending one semester of my senior year as an exchange student in Spain. I've had 4 years of Spanish. By the time i return i should be fairly fluent in both Spanish and Catalan. I'd like to know what yall think of this and how it will factor into college admissions ( note: my school is on a block schedule, so all the classes last a Semester so i wont be missing any classes, i will still have just as many Math, english, ect as my peers, i'll just have 4 fewer electives). I will also likely gain more ECs during my time as an exchange student and should find some interesting essay material.

Anthropology field study

I worked on an archeological dig for a week during the summer with a team from the Univ of Southern Mississippi. We excavated a 17th century french colonial settlement on the Mississippi coast. Primarily a grave yard that was filled after a malaria epidemic killed much of the settlement. I, myself, unearthed several old construction nails and a few bone fragments. It provided a good introduction to the fundamentals of archeology: digging, sifting, surveying, mapping, cataloging.

Major/career

I am hoping to major in anthropology. Im thinking that my mission trips, cultural clubs, archeological field experience, and upcoming exchange experience will show a consistant intrest in the subject and kind of give me an edge, but im not sure. Im mostly interested in native american cultures, especially those in the southwestern US and central america.

Probable senior course load.(assuming i spend one semester in Spain)

AP english
AP Calculus
AP Gov
AP Economics
AP physics or Astronomy

Well thanks. Sorry if it was a little long. Ill try to return the favor if you ask me to. Also, any chances on merit based aid would be helpful.

UChicago - low reach
WashU in Saint Louis - low reach
Davidson - match
Rice - match
NYU - match/possible merit aid
Tulane - match/merit aid
College of Charleston - match/merit aid
Millsaps college - not familiar
U of Southern Mississippi - match/merit aid

The first two I put low reach because luck does matter for them as well as ivy league schools. You are a very competitive candidate and you stand a strong chance for all schools.

UChicago - low reach
WashU in Saint Louis - Probably more of a match with your stats
Davidson - match
Rice - low reach probably a match
NYU - match/possible merit aid
Tulane - match
College of Charleston - safety
Millsaps college - idk
U of Southern Mississippi - safety

Hey, thanks guys. I kind of thought that chicago and Wash U might be high reaches. Thats really incouraging.

And for those of you not from or around Mississippi, Millsaps is a private liberal arts college in Jackson mississippi. I think that its ranked around the 60s or 70s in the US news and world report rankings. I think its a pretty good safety with a fairly low price tag. Cool fact, Johnny Carson attended Millsaps for a while. I dont know if he graduated or not.

Well thanks for the good reviews so far.

If it matters, im probably going to interview at Chicago, WashU, Davidson, and maybe rice. Also WashU, Tulane, and i believe Davidson require separate applications for merit aid. Ill hopefully spend a good bit of time on each application and merit application.

whats this bump thing i keep seeing???

very impressive

can't really say much that hasnt already been said but i researced Millsaps and i would say ur a low match/ safety

Wow, all those activities you have done certainly show that you have a passion in a certain field.

I think you will make NYU, Tulane, College of Charleston, Millsaps college, U of Southern Mississippi with no problem at all. Because of your uniqueness and overall very solid numbers and other credentials, I think you'll have great chances at Davidson and Rice. I think with great recs/essays, you have a pretty good shot at WashU and UChicago.

NYU - Match
Tulane - Match
College of Charleston - Safety
Millsaps college - Safety
U of Southern Mississippi - Safety
Davidson - High Match
Rice - Low Reach
UChicago - Medium Reach
Wash U - Medium Reach

cool, thanks guys for the great reviews. Also if anyone could recommend a few more match/slight reach schools id be grateful. Im look for schools with solid academics, preferably in or near a large city, with a good bit of merit aid that i may have a shot at. Thanks again.

Nice stats.

UChicago - slight reach
WashU - slight reach
Davidson - in
Rice - slight reach
NYU - match/slight reach
Tulane - match
College of Charleston - safety
Millsaps college - safety
U of Southern Mississippi - safety

You might want to consider applying to Johns Hopkins and if you want to reach might as welll go for Yale. You have a shot at Yale.

Mission trips to Honduras, eh? I'll be going there in a couple months for a medical mission trip too ( non religious however)

Well, im not really looking to go to a ivy league school, Combination of cut-throat atmosphere and lack of any merit aid. Also, while the mission trips were through religious organizations, they were not purely evangelical. The primary concern and most of my involvement centered around humanitarian relief(medical care and supplies, clothing, food, construction/maintinence). Well thanks, and if anyone would like me to chance them just leave a link.

Would you be interested in Dartmouth? I know they have a Native American Studies major up there. As for your chances, I more of less agree with what the people up there said.

Well id be interested in a program like the dartmouth native american studies program. But i would really like to be in or near a large city. Also im kind of turned off by the vibes ive been getting from most of the ivy league schools. Thanks for the thought, ill definately look into similar programs.

haha I'd love to help you out with your chance thread but quite frankly I know next to nothing about other colleges besides CU Boulder considering it's my local college

hey kid, i'm returning the favor :)

UChicago: although you are a seriously strong candidate, i feel like this school is so obscure and random in the students that they accept. it truly is a crapshoot with UChicago but i feel like you have the grades to get in. have you seen the essay questions for this year? i feel like with this university the more creative and innovative you can be, the better.

WashU in Saint Louis: slight reach. again, it's one of those tier schools that seems to be a gamble. but you definitely have strong enough test scores and a solid gpa.

Davidson: good match. 80% sure that you will get in.
Rice: slight reach but definitely not impossible for you to get in.
NYU: match.
Tulane <3 : definite match.
College of Charleston: my high school sends so many kids to this school that have much worse grades and test scores than you do so i say it's a safety, for sure.

Millsaps College: i'm not really sure about this school.

U of Southern Mississippi: i'm not too sure about this school either. however, i'll assume that it is public. therefore, i'll also assume that it is a definite safety for you.

cool, thanks guys, Also im considering applying to a few more public schools, more for the price tag than anything else. Maybe UT Knoxville, UMaryland, and UNC Chapel Hill

After further consideration im not sure about appying to NYU, CofC or Tulane (heat). In my thread in the selection forum ive recieved many suggestions and am now considering adding Beloit, Willamette, and maybe Oberlin. Thanks

edit: Sorry i know this is getting confusing, i may just make a new thread soon.

if anyboby wants me to chance them, id be glad to do it, or at least try. Just leave a link

DEFINITELY in at St Louis (my friend got in easily and she isnt half as smart as you sound!) and U of I chicago. Not sure about the others but it sounds like you are doing GREAT, especially with your commitment towards service. great ACT score too!

:) hope this helps
