chances/question

I just got a stupid detention for doing the "freshmen, you suck!" cheer at a pep rally. I'm normally a "goody-two-shoes" and this is the first detention I have received. Does this stupid detention hurt my chances for UNC?

Haha, are you joking? I think the only thing keeping you out of UNC right now is your low SAT score.

I would look into the common data set for UNC for detail. Being a North Carolina resident living in Chapel Hill (and seeing who gets in), I would say your chances are very slim. UNC accepts 18% out of state students. Because of the low OOS admits, the admission is extremely competitive. Most OOS students accepted are about as outstanding as the Ivy applicants. The OOS acceptance rate is about 20% of the total applicant pool. The overall admit statistics looks more promising than it is because of the higher acceptance rate (and lower stats) of instate students. Quite frankly, if you were a NC resident, your chances would be iffy unless you were legacy. I would not waste the $70-$90 on the application unless you were an athlete or had a super hook (music, classics, major research publication, unique community service study).

most cases people say an SAT score isnt going to make or break an accpetance but i would advise you to try and improve your score because it is going to be significantly lower than the average score in a very competitive OOS applicant pool. apart from that i would say you are a strong candidate. good luck!

thanks for responding vc08, hornet, and ChesterBoy... i just got my new SAT scores today from when i took them in the beginning of October and i now have a 2010... 730 V, 660 M, and 620 W. Does that help?

Dear Kelster,

I hope you get in! I think you have good chances especially with your improved SAT scores!!

by any chance you should apply, especially now with your sat scores... i dont believe in not applying like the other person said. who knows you could be an amazing writer and write some good essays that would get you in. apply.
