Not your common type of question, I'm not asking for my specific chance at any university

My school has 150 students in my graduating class

My guidance counselor has made it a point to call EACH of the universities I am applying to (as well as writing the standard LOR) to explain what my situation was freshman - junior year with the admissions officer of my area. He is only doing this for 6 students. He told me that he was doing this to give them a backed up excuse of why some of my grades were lower than they should be and why I had near to no EC's from freshman - junior year (due to me being on the homebound list/in the hospital a lot/surgery) and give me more of a name in front of the adcoms.

My question is this- Does this put me at any more of an advantage than if he hadn't called any of them? Will I be penalized for this? Would the adcoms look down on me as though I couldn't get in by myself by my grades and essay, my guidance counselor had to call them?

For my top choice (applying ED), I am a little over the average 50% profile, and the school's acceptance rate is around 39%. Would this put me at a higher chance than others that have my grades?

I'm not sure if my query makes any sense... if it doesn't, please just ask and i'll try to refine it. I'm working on calc homework and not exactly in the english sort of mind, haha
