Weighted GPA: 3.5
SAT: 1850

I have been enrolled in at least 2 honors courses every year for high school, this year I am taking a UConn English 1011 this year (UConn provides my high school with its own english course, similar to an AP but we do not have an AP exam at the end fo the year) and I am also taking Ap Government and Politics.

I have been working a 10+ hour job at my local riding barn for the past 4 years and have recieved my Girl Scout Gold Award aswell. I have been a year book editor for the past two years with active participation in my freshman and sophomore years too. I am also heavily involved in the musical department at my school and this year I am the Stage Manager for our schools production.

I have been in conctact with the admissions office every few weeks asking questions and showing my interest in the university. What do you think my chances are for getting in?

On another note, I have visited GMU twice and I loved the feel of the school. However recently I have been hearing that the campus is dull on the weekends and that student are not happy with the severe lack of things to do throughout the year because there is hardly any housing on the grounds. What is the social life like at GMU, is it what you make or it or is there truely a lack of things to do and ways to meet people?

I know a few students who go there, so my knowledge is only second-hand.

I think your chances are reasonably good, based on my reading of their admissions criteria. As for the social life, I think you are correct that there is some dissatisfaction with it, partly because a large number of students are commuters. The university has increased the amount of on-campus housing in recent years. Good luck!

my D is also from CT and shares the concern about campus life/commuter school image. It’s one thing if a lot of students live off campus in student apartments and such, but if everyone really goes home, that’s pretty dull. That said, we’ve asked some local VA people and while they say the school is not ranked as high as other VA schools, it’s still considered a good school and showing great improvements. They also say that there is so much to do locally that it shouldn’t be a concern if the actual campus has many events or not. Your stats would lead me to think you’d get accepted, so let us know if you hear soon.

GMU is the 3rd or 4th best, moderately huge sized school in VA.

UVA

Virginia Tech

JMU

GMU. Although the differences between 3 and 4 are at the point now where they can be interchanged, but because JMU is more established, I give them a slight step up overall as of right now. GMU is one of the quickest growing colleges both academically and community wise in the country.

Check out some of the construction projects they have underway:

Some include a hotel/conference center, doubling the size of the current library, 400 more beds that are being complete in Spring '10, 1,200 more beds by Spring '12, renovatioin of two student unions by '11, and many more just to name a few.
