Thought I'd jump into this whole crazy chancing thing, if only to see if I've evaluated my own chances somewhat correctly. Thanks in advance for all your input!

Prospective schools:
Brown (legacy)
Carnegie Mellon (MCS)
MIT
Rice
UChicago
UMass Amherst
Penn (SAS)
Rochester
WUSTL
Yale

Very good chance at Rice with you being from MA and a high performing student.
I would say the same about Rochester and WUSTL.
Most probable at Chicago.
CMU - Computer Science iffy, anything else in.
Yale, MIT, Brown - crapshoot.
UMASS is a State school so you should be automatically in with your performance.

Thanks for the input! Anyone else?

SATs are okay, though gpa could be a little better. ECs are not stellar.
Brown (legacy) - Low Reach/ Match with Legacy
Carnegie Mellon (MCS) - Match
MIT - High Reach
Rice - Mid Reach
UChicago - Low Reach
UMass Amherst - Match
Penn (SAS) - Mid Reach (RD)
Rochester - Match
WUSTL - Low Reach
Yale - High Reach

^Thanks, although I’m positive that UMass is a safety with my stats and school’s history of acceptance.

sorry, i when i said match, i meant a high likelihood of getting in which included safety.

^Okay, that makes more sense, thanks.

Anyone else?

I’m also from MA in a similar situation (got into WUSTL attending in the fall). I don’t know what it is, but I know people from my county (Middlesex) tend to get very crappy results with Rice…but you could be lucky. You seem to fit the profile for every college you listed, but the Ivies, MIT, Chicago, and WUSTL are complete crapshoots (all of them are under 15% admit rate this year and are probably going to drop another 1-2% for your year as well). Good luck (:

^I’m not from Middlesex, but thanks for the advice/warning. Not enough people from my school have applied to Rice for me to be able to see results on Naviance, so I’ll just hope for the best … by the way, 'grats on WUSTL.

Secondly, I just got my May subject test scores back. I got an 800 on Lit and a 730 on US History (probably will not submit to most schools). In June I’ll be taking Physics (expecting ~750) and Math II (expecting 800).

where are you applying early?

I’m applying EA to Chicago, MIT, and probably UMass. I might add a few more EA schools if I stumble upon any interesting ones.

Caltech and Georgetown are open and I think probably Notre Dame.

An ED at Brown or Rice will improve your chances greatly if you are certain about one of them but playing with several EAs at once will probably also give you a good chance at one of them.

I really do like Brown a lot - I’ve been to visit a few times - but I don’t think I could give up applying to Chicago (one of my top choices) and at least trying my hand at Yale and MIT, however slim the chances are. Will legacy help me at Brown even if I don’t apply ED?

You may want to ask someone at Brown. The only place that were particular about giving weight to legacy only in ED was UPENN. Since legacy was nt pertinent to my kids, I did not always pay attention.

[BAA - Services: College Advising](<a href=“Benefits | Alumni & Friends | Brown University”>Benefits | Alumni & Friends | Brown University)

Legacy at Ivies tends to help a bit to differentiate between two very similar candidates (saying if there are identical/similar gpa’s, essays, EC’s, SAT/ACTs, etc). Likewise, if you apply ED to Brown you are still allowed to apply EA at any school you wish – just, if you get into Brown ED you must withdraw your applications to the other schools (unless Brown has a you-must-only-apply-to-this-school-early policy like Yale/Stanford does). Personally I applied ED to a school and EA to Chicago, WPI, and zooMass.

Update: new SAT subject test scores.
Math II: 800
Physics: 800 (:))

Nice! Fellow FIRST Robotics member :D

Your test scores are decent, your grades are ok/good. As a woman looking into engineering you have a good advantage, a lot of girls I know that do robotics have gotten into great engineering schools. The issue is to what level did you take your ECs? Taking robotics for example, were you team captain? Did you qualify for world festival? Do you have any state or national awards? If you answered yes to those questions it would really help your application. I see you are focused on your major through your ECs but it wouldn’t hurt to have some awards to back that up.

I don’t know much about some of these schools but for Brown with legacy I’d say low to mid reach. CMU I’d say mid reach. MIT as mid to high reach. Yale as high reach.

Chance me back?

^Alright, thanks for the input. My robotics team this year actually double-qualified for Worlds, with an Inspire and a winning alliance captainship in different states (although I can’t say we did particularly well at Worlds itself).

Yeah, I know that my awards are lacking, and that it’s probably the weakest component of my application…
