Chances/Should I apply?

Hello there! I am a junior from California (I know, I'M FAR AWAY!) but I am considering Delaware as one of my top schools. From what I've seen and heard, the campus is beautiful and the school has all the programs that i'm interested in.

My GPA is a 3.6/4.0 (unweighted/weighted) and I'm going to have taken seven APs by the time I graduate (World, US, Language, Statistics, Music Theory, Government, Literature and Spanish) as well as honors everything else. I took the ACT today and am expecting between a 28 and 30, though I was hoping to break 30
I was a competitive gymnast until last year, and now I'm doing club and coaching classes. More than anything though, I am extremely involved in music and theatre. I am in band, choir, orchestra and drumline, I've participated in both school and community plays and I have also taught drama classes. I also have a lot of service work from mission trips and other events and I am co-president of the community service club at my school.

I am hesitant to apply to Delaware because I really want to major in music education, but I will be unable to audition into the music program next year because travelling would cost too much. Do you think it would be worth it to apply and wait a year to go into music if I get in? Would I even be able to get in? I know Delaware puts a lot of emphasis on state residency and I'm about as far from Delaware as it gets :P

Thank you in advance for your help!

I can’t tell you anything about getting into the music program (although I hear their marching band is great!). However, I’m sure they would love to have a Californian with your academics and interests!

One of my D’s friend’s applied and auditioned (from NY) and they basically told him on the spot that he was in.

Good luck in this process!

Oh my gosh, yes! One of the reasons I want to go there is the amazing band =D
Having a decent marching band is near the top of my college criteria =P

We had an awesome tour guide when we first visited. He was an engineering major who also played in the marching band. They had just played in DC at the inauguration parade. Drum major from my D’s HS goes there (just finished freshman year). D was in the marching band in HS (marched in Columbus Day parade in NYC, etc), but I am 100% sure she won’t pick up her flute again for the next four years (at least)!

Can you send an audition tape/dvd? They have to understand that not everyone can audition in person. Is that an abosolute requirement?

My daughter’s room mate was in marching band at UD. They were excellent…but it was like a part time job!

Best of luck with your applications and choices next year. It’s a nice school with a lot to offer.

I think you will get into the school but it is hard to go into music ed as a sophmore. My D said some kids that do that have to either take alot of classes in other sessions or stay 5 years to complete the degree. It’s not an easy audition there because of supply and demand.

It does not say on their website whether or not taped auditions are a possibility, I was thinking of calling the head of the department near the end of the summer when it gets closer to application time, does that sound reasonable?

The head of the department is Dr Paul Head I think he actually tought high school in California.(I may be wrong) I would call Mary Dunnack she will have your answers about the audition tape.
