Hey guys can you please chance me for Vanderbilt?

State: MS - Public School
GPA: 4.0/4.0 UW - 7 AP courses taken (all offered)
Rank: 2/239 (Salutatorian)
ACT: 30
SAT IIs: 730,730,740, 650 - US, Wld History, Bio-m, Bio-e (bio and history major)
ECs: (Sports took up much of my time) varsity soccer -captain, varsity cross country, national honor society, beta club, work-20hr/wk, community service for church
Essay: good
Recs: 2 good ones
Race: Asian Indian - moved to us when I was 7.. So I'm bilingual..

Everything looks pretty good, except for that ACT score. While it is barely in the middle 50% (30-33), colleges actually have a higher standard now for Asians on standardized tests. Not sure how it reflects on the ACT, but they theoretically get 50 points taken away from their overall SAT score because they are now an over-represented minority. However, Vandy sort of lacks major diversity and may look past that. Overall I say that you are looking at a low to mid reach. Good luck!

youre in no doubt, thats exactly what you need for Vandy, tests are good and so are ECs, they like ppl who work. If your essay is good then youre in

You have a GREAT shot! Your grades are amazing! Sure, your ACT scores are average, but your SATII scores are pretty good. Diversity will also work in your favor. Good Luck!

Vandy is one school where your Asian-ness may help you. They have a lot of white kids there, and from what I've heard, there isn't too much racial interaction. Therefore, they will probably see you an an under-represented minority.

Thanks..ya i estimate by chances being around 60-70%? Am i being too optimistic? I realize my ACT is borderline, but my rank should compensate. I realize that vandy puts great emphasis on ECs but i played varsity soccer (captain) and cross country. This took up most of my time. i mentioned this on my app..

finding it in an article isn't needed... affirmative action's goal is to bring UNDER represented minorities (URM) to schools

asian americans are OVER represented minorities at top schools (higher % of school population than % of overall population in society)

an example of higher standards would be something like this...

there could be thousands of A.A's applying with a perfect score on the math section (this is not racist, it is just a fact that A.A's score higher than other races on average in math) and then only hundreds of white people with the same score applying.
Therefore, it means that an A.A would virtually have to have gotten a perfect score to be competitive, while the white applicant could still have a chance without the perfect score.

adcoms try to make the classes diverse, which is why they wouldn't just admit all the A.A's with perfect scores. Therefore, the standard for A.A's is definitely higher

**to the OP

solid match, the racial thing doesn't look like it would be huge for your case since your stats and activities are solid

ya i think that being Asian wont help me either..i live in MS so im guessing that would help me more because a lot of people from MS dont go off to top schools...and we dont have the best high schools in america.

I still think that that's a relatively dumb assumption. To base any type of admissions decision on the fact that said individual is Asian but happened to get a great ACT score but not a perfect one is, well, stupid. I feel as though getting a 30 on the ACT isn't going to hurt anyone as long as its within the middle 50 percent. Remember that the IQRs of reported schools take into account all applicants, regardless of race, so I'm sure that the middle 50% counts just as much for Asians as it does for us honkies.
