bump, bump

if you're from CA I'd say you're definitely in

sdcharger - believe it or not, you may not get into Mechanical Engineering. That section of that college has a GPA acceptance of 4.5 or higher, SAT scores for math are low. Also, your AP scores are in humanities, they need to be in math/physics. As an alternative, apply for the less popular major of industrial engineering. You can always change after a year and the basic courses are the same as ME. Also, if you don't get in for the fall, apply for the summer session in February. Competition is less for summer, you only have to take one 5 or 8 week course, pass it with a C and you are good to go for fall. Word of caution, if you do get in, line up your housing before the end of April or you may end up living in AG or Atascadero, or in a box under a bridge somewhere. No kidding, housing is gone by July.

4.5gpa for mech. engineering? I knew the program was tough, but 4.5 doesnt seem realistic. One of my friends' roomates is a ME major class of '11, and I know he didnt have perfect grades. Maybe I'm mistunderstanding your post though, if so please correct me.

tomtom - that information is straight from the admission office's mouth. When we re-applied for summer session we were told our student's 4.0 GPA wouldn't qualify for ME because ME had a minimum of 4.5 GPA. We were politely advised to pick another less popular engineering major in order to up our student's chances of admission. When you consider that AP classes allow students to graduate from HS with a 5.0, you can see how this is possible.

Add to this, that both CSU and UC actively and aggressively seek the best and brightest from out of state and out of nation, California, B+ students are being pushed out of the UC and CSU system and pushed in the CC system. Yes, as a California taxpayer with 3 California college bound students, this incensed me. I believe our California students deserve priority admission over out of state/country students as our tax dollars are paying for this system to exist.

I must be thinking of another gpa computation then, where you only get the 8 extra points. Spread out among, say 20 a-g classes your soph. and jr. year, even with all A's, your gpa still comes to be 4.4. Mind you, this is if one only took 5 classes per year, with two final grades per class.

I do agree with you on the out of state issue. As far as education goes, CA isnt very high when it comes to high schools. All we have is our UC/CSU system, save them for the CA students. On another note, these schools really need to get their act together making way for new students.

4.5 is way too high. i talked to cal poly engineering department ans they said 4.o ish. your range is berkely/ mit standards. oh, i retook the math level 2 subject test and i know i did a lot better.

4.5 is way too high, and tomtom is right. it's impossible to get a 4.5 when taking the right about of classes for sophomore and junior year because cal poly allows ONLY 8 honors points. 4.0 is about the gpa average on the students in ME. i'm friends with many of the students there and that's about what they got, 4.0-4.4 range.

sdchargers, what's your math & verbal SAT score? Cal Poly doesn't look at writing so it'd be easier to determine your placement if you take out your writing score. Your ACT score is average.. but just average. It might not be enough, but it isn't impossible. Do you have any work experience in your major? that's a definete plus.

math 690
verbal 560

no work experience in major, im a ref at a soccer park

1250 is a little above average compared to last years stats (1243 for those applied, 1216 for those accepted) and your GPA of 4.17 is above average according to the stats (3.79 applied, 3.71 accepted), although most of the ME students are 4.0-4.4 range.

I'd say you definetely have a chance, but it's debateable on whether or not you'll actually get in. I have a friend that was in the 1500s out of 2400 and 3.8 CSU gpa and he got in ME last year, but another friend who was way above that in SATs and valedictorian with a 4.4 CSU gpa.. had 1 A- all throughout high school and she didn't get into ME two years ago. It all depends on what others who are going into ME this year have. It's all a numbers game at Cal Poly.

Definetely apply and just wait to see what happens.

Good luck!
