chances? (sorry!!)

wow i hate doing this, but the next ten and a half days are going to be a living hell for me; hopefully this will help me know what to expect when i log onto that decision site on the 15th...

hispanic female from a rigorous (i think? 2 people already got into harvard...maybe that type of thing is more common than i thought?) public school in santa barbara, ca

uc gpa: 3.8/3.9
sat: 2020 (650m, 660cr, 710w) [i only took it once. i kind of regret it now...maybe i could have done better]
sat ii us history: 730
sat ii math 2: 680

i'll skip 9th grade, since that doesn't really count
10th grade: 3 honors classes, ap world history (4); bio at city college
11th grade: 2 honors classes, ap us history (5); political science and study of murder at city college
12th grade: ap eng lit, ap econ, ap chem; calculus, prison society, and criminal investigation at city college

In 9th and the 1st semester of 10th grade I had a mix of Bs and As
in 11th and the 2nd semester of 10th grade I had only a few Bs
so that, plus the strong-ish senior year schedule, shows a nice grade improvement, right?

as for activities...
yearbook (2 yrs) - editor (1 year)
theater arts boosters club (4 yrs) - webmistress (2 yrs)
vonnegut conspiracy club (2 yrs) - vice president (2 yrs)
cnsi apprentice research program (summer after 11th grade) - ucsb's science research camp with grad students. ucla also has a cnsi center.

volunteer work:
definitely not my strong point. the summer before 9th grade i was a counselor at a theater camp for a few months. in 11th grade i was a counselor for a different theater camp for one month.

awards:
nhs/csf
national hispanic scholar

i'm hispanic, my parents make about $30,000 a year, and neither went to college

i've had one job since 10th grade, and I was promoted in the beginning of 11th. i wrote an essay about this, relating it to the fact that my family was poor and i wanted to help so i got a job

i applied as a chem major. i wrote an essay about how i want to be a forensic scientist--thus, the chem major, ap chem class, and really random city college classes about criminals!

my third essay was random, but everyone in my english class loved it and made me read it outloud. it was about one time last year when i danced in the rain with my friends. super descriptive. i think it might really have stood out when the admission officers were reading through the 298747823 other essays...

okay, so, what are my chances at this lovely school in westwood?

whyxbotherx:

UCLA: Slight Reach

I'd say slight reach/match. Your weighted GPA is somewhat low, considering all those honors and AP classes you took.

i calculated it myself on the ucop gpa calculator site last summer...i was kind of confused. i know when i filled out my app, the classes my school considers to be honors (gate) are not considered as honors to the uc people--for sophomore year. so although my app said "English 10 G/T", it was listed as "NH," making it an unweighted credit...i think...

also, i think there is a cap of 8 semester weighted credits? i don't know. my gpa is probably something else entirely. unfortunately the only transcript i have with me right now is from early 10th grade, so i can't say what my most recent weighted/unweighted gpas are.

Oh, I had that problem with the application, too. I'm guessing that freshman and sophomore honors classes don't count, because I recall my school's administrators say that if an honors/AP class doesn't have a majority of junior/seniors, then the UCs won't give you that extra GPA point.
