Another chances thread, I know. Sorry for torturing you guys like this!

Volunteering:
* 250 hours at a big hospital (filing paperwork, mopping the floor, do-everything-guy, etc.)
* 120 hours at local elementary school that I attended (helping out the preschool kids with their breakfast, reading books to them, etc.) [note: I never really did this for the purpose of putting it on my college application, because it was just something I loved to do and would help relieve stress.]
* 50 hours at local public library (shelving books, checking out books, reading to young children)
* 50 hours at blood bank (assisted in blood drives, distributed snacks and beverages, donated blood of my own)

Btw, do the community college courses get added onto my high school GPA? I was never really sure about this, but regardless I took those classes because I was genuinely interested in them.

Great profile; why are you interested in UoC?

I'm interested in Chicago because of its outstanding economics program. I plan to major in business in whatever school I attend, but will major in economics if there is no undergrad business school (like Chicago).

Btw, does Chicago have walk-on tryouts for swimming and baseball?

Greennblue asked a great question. While a lot of undergraduate students at Chicago do major in economics and do go into business, the school is not really set up as a "launch pad" into the professional world, but rather a four-year excursion from reality in the liberal arts tradition.

Check out the core curriculum and decide for yourself if Chicago is still right for you.

If you are interested in D III varsity athletics, go to athletics.uchicago.edu and see if you can contact coaches.

Yes you have a great profile for the U of C and honestly have better stats than I did when I applied. As far as athletics go don't hesitate to contact coaches because there is a great chance with div III athletics that you'll be able to contribute to the team in some way.

Thanks for the advice on the coaches; I will definitely contact them sometime.

So what do you think my chances are? I know all these chances are guesstimates, but I'm just hoping for a ballpark % of acceptance.

You have as good a chance as any applicant to the U of C. This year that number was roughly 27%, next year, in the very low 20's. Chance of acceptance to an elite college is mostly luck with such a qualified group of applicants. Good luck!

I'm an incoming freshman and if admissions granted decisions based only on stats you would be a clear admit. That said there are many things that factor into an application such as essays and recs. So if you can find a way to differentiate yourself with your essays and recs this should be a sure thing.

I'd recommend that you begin writing these essays and compose at least 2 to 3 drafts having multiple people edit them. One thing you must understand is that the U of C wants unique and even eccentric students so my advice would be to show range in your essays and go from something safe to something that is riskier and really expresses who you are. Also try to apply EA if possible because it makes life rather easy.

holy ****....of course you're gonna make it in. In fact...you should be applying to harvard.

Hey dark_blue, when you say "2 years of this and that," are you counting what you're going to be doing in senior year as well? Which would mean you started in junior year and are going to do it for 2 years total? Or is it that you've already done two years?

Just a question from a new junior. :)

Clearly Chicago has some preprofessional programs and career-interest clubs, so it isn't all liberal arts and crafts. And I doubt you'll have trouble getting in.

That said, I think you'd much prefer a true undergraduate program so you can hit the ground running, so to speak. The core curriculum can be cumbersome to someone who has clearly demonstrated that business will be his road... and your best opportunities out of Chicago will be in Chicago, not New York or California.

vuitul: It may not be a crapshoot, but even with great stats there is no guarantee, from last year's posts:

Decision: Rejected

Stats:
Major Applied To: Mathematics
Fee Waiver Used?: No
SAT I (by section): 800 CR 770 M 750 W
SAT IIs: 800 Math II 800 Physics 800 Chemistry

IBs (including this year's: ---
Senior Yr Courseload: Standardised.
Number of Apps from Your School: 1
Other stats (Awards, etc.): NTSE scholarship, olympiad awards (not IMO or anything, but rather decent state and national ranks.).
Subjective:
ECs listed on app: Creative writing, MUN, debate, math team, cryptography (yes, really!) team, graphic design.
Job/Work Experience: None.
Essays (subject and responses): I thought they were really rather good, but clearly the admissions comittee didn't agree with me on that count.
Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): ---

^2/32? Indian system?

What is that?

i guess that means that the applicant was form india..thus the GPA was converted from the indian educational system

Maybe idad's rejected student was an international needing aid.

I know no details for that student, there are others from the US with similar stats also not accepted. The point was, good "stats" alone will not cinch the deal (though obviously they can't hurt).

I always refer people to this post: it's a must read dark_blue for any school
