Asian female senior, public school. Extremely competitive, 70% Asian; about 45% of the class of 06 went to a UC, and around 25-30% to UC Berkeley, UCLA, or UCSD. At least 10 accepted to Stanford out of around 75 applications.

Other info: Stanford is my first choice and I'd just like a pure, honest evaluation of my chances there. Thank you if you read this whole thing!

Bumping this

good gpa, ok test scores, ok senior courseload, extracurriculars kinda lacking (except the passion in fbla) no real hooks to help you out = high reach

sorry to sound curt, i just don't like it when people say "pure, honest evaluation" of your chances especially to really high-end colleges like this where it's either reach or super reach as a chance

aer:

UCB/UCLA: Safe Match
UCSD: Safety
UCD: Safety

Very generic. I do not see anything warranting Stanford. Your rank is low thus I do not understand how you can say your courseload is one of the "hardest".

Berkeley and UCLA seem to be matches for you.
UCSD would be a safe match or match.

What school do you go to? The high Asian population and competitiveness make it seem like one in my area. Is it Lynbrook or Monta Vista?

Ok, I will be brutally honest, since that's what you wanted.

Mediocre classes...mediocre SATs...subpar ECs

yawn

oh, and Stanford? Forget it.

Princeton, eh?

stupak - Alright. I didn't take you as curt anyway.
gnrfan - Lynbrook
fastmed - Our school rank is based off of unweighted GPA. I'd say grade inflation, except I'd look bitter, so you can ask someone else from my school in the top 10%. But I don't know how else you'd explain not being in the top 10% after getting one B, where at most other schools that might still keep you in the top 1%, let alone top 10%.
faustaacomplice - Ouch. Especially at the courseload comment.

BTW Princeton is one of those ventures where I don't really think I have a sliver of hope of getting into, but it's nice to try. (It's one of the least likely universities I would want to go to on that list)

For those who are denouncing a 2260+ SAT as "mediocre," my only advice is CALM DOWN. Sure a 2260 is not "perfect," but it is well above the college's average SAT Standard. Remember, a good SAT score will only get you to a certain point. After that, you'll need more juicy stuff to prove that you are better than the 10 other applicants who have the same SAT scores.

2260 isn't mediocre jimmy, you're mistaking what we mean. 2260 is AVERAGE for stanford, which can be terrible if you want apply to a school because applications require sparks usually, and without a spark your chances are virtually 0.

And I don't think that even a 2400 could make any so-called "sparks." What's the difference between a 2260 student and a 2400 student? Not much. If the 2260 student has a few more outstanding ECs, she/he'd receive a definite A-stamp over that "sparkling" 2400 kid.

and thus the reason why thousands of kids get disappointed every year, because there's always someone more sparkley than you. that's why the 2400 kid with the outstanding ecs will win, unless of course someone else with the perfect essay beats him. college admissions is a *****, so you have to try to get the most sparks possible, and a 2400 is a spark. 2260 isn't.

average gpa. sats are ridiculously low for a student that attends an 'extremely' competitive high school. none of your ecs stand out. many people are in clubs. your jv swimming scholar award is worthless. what does that award show? are you that good at swimming? also many people get national commendation. i am not sure how big your fbla awards or your zoo zoo thing. the only way you will get in is by outstanding essays and spectacular recommendations.

Why are you so bitter realestate?

my friend got in with a 29 ACT and mid 600s on the SAT IIs. umm regular SAT I believe she got around a 1900. she's not a URM or recruited athlete

I knew this guy who knew this girl who won the lottery once.

did she have super ECs rockers?
