Chances - Stern ED

Background:

White Male

U.S./Czech Citizenship (born in Czech Republic)

Have attended International School in Czech Republic since 10th grade but lived in New Jersey for most of my life.

SAT (one sitting): 700 M, 720 CR, 730 W

GPA: 3.72 UW (school doesn’t weight/rank), relatively difficult to get A’s – explained in my counselor’s letter of recommendation

Most rigorous curriculum (IB)

IB predicted score with bonus points: 41-42
Economics (HL): 7, Psychology (HL): 7, English (HL): 6, Spanish (HL): 7, Math (SL): 6, Biology (SL): 5-6, (2-3 Bonus Points)

ECs:
Debate team (10,11,12) – placed 1st twice and 3rd once at international tournaments in Europe
MUN (11,12) – best delegate at one conference
Spanish Club (11,12) – founder
Tennis (9,10,11) JV-9, V-10,11

Boy Scouts (9) – Life Scout, Leader in troop
Student Council representative (10,11)
Internship at ecology center in NYC – past two summers
Work experience- employed as ski instructor and tennis instructor (9th grade)
Those are the major ones. Obviously, EC’s in 9th and 10th grade are lacking. That’s somewhat attributed to my move which messed things up a bit.

Other achievements:
Book Awards in 11th grade (outstanding student): IB Economics and IB Biology
Coach’s Award for Leadership and Commitment to Tennis team (11)

Recommendations:
Economics teacher about my enthusiasm for economics: excellent
Spanish teacher talking about my quick improvement in Spanish: should be very good

Do I have a chance at Stern for Early Decision I? Does Stern defer ED applicants or do they just accept/reject? Will my SAT scores/GPA put me out of reach?

Thank you in advance. :)

Stern does not defer applicants from the ED process.

Your SAT score and your GPA are fantastic. Your IB scores are good. Your EC’s and awards are good. Its nice that you started a club and your Spanish teacher can talk about all that in your rec.

Overall, you are a strong candidate for admission. And applying EDI will only improve your chances. Good luck!

Thank you. But does applying ED1 vs. applying RD really help all that much for Stern? I was looking at the ED and RD acceptance rates and there doesn’t seem to be much of a difference.

I was just wondering because I know for other schools there’s sometimes a huge difference in acceptance rates between ED and RD, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at NYU.

Anyone else? :)
