After soph. yr...went to Israel for 6-week educational experience. I had to leave early b/c of a war...common app essay will be about this
After jr. year...Cornell Summer College psychology class; received A; will get recommendation from professor

I have had a job since last summer and I work about 10 hrs./week during the school year
I'm also a National Merit Semifinalist.

Major: Psychology

I'm applying to Cornell ED, College of Arts& Sciences. Both parents and aunt went there.
Others: Tufts, Wesleyan U., UNC (EA), Brandeis, Emory, U. Maryland, Goucher College, U. Delaware

It'd be great if you could suggest some match schools...preferably nothing too large.

Thank you so much!!

I think you have a very strong chance at Cornell...especially if you have a legacy and if you can get a recommendation. Just make sure to write a killer essay, and I think you would have a great shot.

Among the others I would say Wesleyan, U. Maryland, GC, and U Delaware are matches. Another match/slight reach could be Boston College.

Thanks! I hope you're right!

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Your rank hurts you a bit at Cornell--and the Ivies are all about rank. Your test scores and ECs are okay, but not outstanding. I give you about a 45% chance (slight reach) at Cornell. That recommendation from the Cornell professor is key as far as possibly getting in, so make sure it's a good one.

All the other are good matches except for Tufts. I'm surprised you aren't applying to UNC or North Carolina State, but I guess you want a smaller school.

I'd also consider Rhodes (in Memphis) and if you don't mind a college that's a little larger, John Hopkins. Colgate is also a slight reach, but appears to be the kind of school you might like (lots of personal attention and personal growth is stressed, great Psychology program, and it is located not very far away from Cornell in location, so it's in a really gorgeous area). Note: Colgate's psychology program has a specialized neurosciences program you might like. It's one of only two such programs in the country.

Anyway, good luck with your colleges.

Thanks for the suggestions! A few things to clear up, I'm not sure if they'll make a difference...

My rank would be better, but b/c of my school's ranking system I am penalized for taking 2 languages freshman year and for newspaper. If I did not take the newspaper course, I couldn't do anything for the newspaper at all (I could not be the editor). However, because it is not AP, IB, or Honors, my school does not weight it...it just goes in like a CP class. If I had not taken this course at all and had not replaced it with anything, I would've had a better GPA, still had enough credits to graduate, and could've gone to school an hour later. I hope colleges realize this.

Also, I'm applying to UNC EA. However, I would really like to go out of state (and preferably out of the south), so that explains the lack of NC schools.

and the Ivies are all about rank.

^ not really. then what would they do about schools like mine where we DONT rank?

bump......
