Chances Thread for ivy or top colleges?

Hey guys, I was just wondering what my chances are at the following institutions. I am actually quite happy where I am at right now. The only reason I want to transfer out of G.V.S.U, is because no one has heard of this place. I'm considering being pre-med, and hope to strive for some of the top medical schools in the country. Anyway, I know that Grand Valley State University in Allendale Michigan will not help me very much regarding name recognition. So, here are the list of schools that I am considering, and below the list are my stats. Thanks guys. Also, I am in the Honors college at my current university. Specifically what are my chances at the ivy league schools?

So, what are my chances????

Sorry guys, I completely forgot to put my high school record in there. I had a 3.85 in high school with a few A.P classes and whatnot. Also, my ACT score was a 29 (yeah, i know, a little low). I am, however, considering retaking the ACT. I’m also not in dire need of gaining acceptance to one of my transfer schools, so, I just want to reach for the starts (insert crying baby here). Lets say I receive a 32 on the ACT. Where will that put me with top schools.

I think you’re a great applicant. It kinda threw me off how A- brought down your GPA. Where I go to school we count whole grades so when i get straight A’s it’s a 4.0 Anyway, i think your Ec’s are stellar and academic work is good as well. You never know with the Ivy’s tho, they have the strangest ways of going about deciding who to admit despite great stats. Good luck!

Here are a few things you can do to increase your chances of admission at the schools you might want to transfer to as a junior: 1. Get all of the prerequisites for your major (up to junior year) and the school’s core out of the way (assuming they have a core), 2. Put a lot of time into your essay on why you want to transfer, and 3. Solidify the relationships you have with your professors. Other than that you have a pretty solid list of EC’s and a very good GPA. Best of luck in the transfer process.

I think Amherst was way below that rate this year.

O_O …3% get into Brown? And with my LOW SATs and HS, not to mention low-level math, I’m totally screwed! :frowning: Then again, I did come from a poor background, and did go to a very bad high school. That’s not enough.

Well, I hope you get in.

Wow.. Cornell’s transfer rate is a lot higher than I would have thought.. and higher than Chicago’s?
Duke seems to be a superstar here though!

Actually could you guys put like… very good chance of admission, good chance of admission, slim chance of admission, very slim chance of admission on each of the colleges for me.

like so

Harvard - 8.1% very slim
Yale - 3.9% very slim
Stanford - 5.1% very slim
UPenn - 12.4% slim
Duke - 7.9% very slim
Dartmouth - 12.6% slim
Columbia College - 6.3% very slim
Columbia Fu - 24.1% good chance

and so on…

Cornell’s admission rates are misleading, it constitutes guaranteed transfers plus all the dummys who think “omg Cornell is so easy to get in to I’m going to apply even though I have a 3.2 from a TTT”

If I remember correctly, Amherst admitted fifty freshmen past their “quota” this year. Therefore, that rate is likely to decline even more. MMoral, you can still get into Brown schools with “low” stats. It will be an uphill battle and you will need an amazing personal statement, but it can be done.

I get the feeling that you’re scared of competition. When someone comments on how surprised they are of Cornell’s transfer rate, you always try to deter them from applying because Cornell’s your first choice.

haha yeah penn_dreamer is right

i understand why you would want to leave gvsu (although i don’t go there) I am from GRCC and would never want to go to gvsu  waaayyy too boring for me, which is why i am leaving the state! The name isnt too big of a deal when applying to med-school thought, what is more important to the med schools is having a high gpa. I would reccomend going to a college where you can get good grades because med schools care much less about where you went than your actual gpa. your course load seems a bit easy, why are you taking classes like intro to health and medical controversies?

Well, Intro to health professions is probably the greatest waste of time in my life, but my reason for taking it is to tell medical schools that I hadn’t planned on being a doctor until my sophomore year. Now thats a little bit of a fabrication, but my stats from this year are way better than last year regarding extracurriculars. The HNR infront of medical controversies means honors. So, you are definitely misled by the suppossed easy content of that course. Basically, at least from my limited experience HNR= a ***** of a class…

Penn_dreamer- wrong, I’m just tired of everyone seeing the high acceptance rate at C, which IS misleading, and applying based solely on this.

Fear of competition has nothing to do with this, he won’t even be applying to the same school as I will so it would be quite silly for me to “fear” anything.

you and a few others always argue about cornells admissions rates and how they are misleading blah blah

we all know cornell is a good school and we all know the idiots that think cals will be easy to get in to wont get in..

just because you know it doesn’t mean those that come on here for advice do as well.

I’m doing a service by telling people who are applying solely based on admission rates that those statistics are misleading. I would hope that if I made that mistake someone else would enlighten me as well.

I would appreciate it if people would comment on my chance of admission at these different institutions. Thanks for all the constructive comments so far!!!

Bump…

no one answered this thread for a reason; the reason being that this thread is just too complicated. You are asking for IVY chances? c’mon, everyone here wants to go to an ivy, AND WE ALL KNOW how difficult it is to say one’s chances. If you want “chances” why dont you look over other threads which have been made in the past with similar stats. Also, i think several universities on your list are no chance at all.
