Chances Thread

I know that these threads are pointless and don't matter anyway, because it's just a luck of the draw, but I need your opinions please.

I'm applying to Choate and Andover.
Here you go.

GPA - I have about a 3.8 - 4.0 (about a 93-94 average)
SSAT - 90 math, 98 verbal, 96 reading
Interview - went great at Andover (she said I was perfect for their school). Tepid at Choate ... was my first interview and didn't feel like I did as well as I did at the other schools.

Recs - excellent from English, great from Math
Prizes:
1. School Spelling Bee
2. Grade-wise Short Story Award, 7th grade (big thing)
3. French Award, 7th Grade
4. 1st Annual Pi Award - schoolwide contest for memorizing most digits

Would you list your ECs? Kind of hard to tell without those.

I play soccer (hopeful for Varsity this year), and I volunteer at the Humane Society. I also have a small job at the local Green Market selling flowers.

You sound like a strong candidate. Why only two schools? It just keeps getting crazier at these schools and Choate is exceptionally weird acceptance wise. I know people who got in at all the top schools except Choate (one with a strong rec from a teacher there) and several who got into Choate but were rejected everywhere else.

sounds great to me, i think i agree with suze tho- maybe try exeter?

Maybe. I really want to apply to others, but would it be too late? How could I have interviews?

well im applying to exeter and i have yet to interview- you still have time. ^_^

Sabre, when's your interview? I want to schedule one with Groton. Do they do them over Christmas break?

I was thinking more in terms of adding a safety or 2. A school that doesn't have a plethora of candidates with your stats.

Need a little more info to suggest some. What kind of school are you coming from? What are the most important things to you in choosing a school?

No, Groton does not do interviews over Christmas. My grandmother asked, and they said very clearly that they do not. However, you may want to inquire personally, because occasionally they make exceptions. You never know. St. Mark's is doing that for me, which is really nice. Otherwise I would have to have an off-campus interview.

olivia567-
ive contacted exeter for an interview (theyre supposed to send an alumni contact or something) but i havent heard from them yet. funny because last yr when i was thinking about applying, they send someone's name like right away.

olivia567 -- Of course you have chances! However, I think suze is giving you good advice. There are many boarding schools that routinely send the top 10 - 30 % of the class to top colleges. If safety schools can offer you a better education than your current school and offer a great boarding life, they are worthy of consideration.

Sorry if I missed it - but what grade are you in?

I'm in eighth.

What do you think my chances would be if I applied to Groton and Lawrenceville too? What is Groton's average SSAT score?

I think what I'm really looking for in a boarding school that I couldn't get elsewhere, besides a good education, is the dorm life. I know it sounds stupid, but I have no siblings, and I went to Duke TIP last summer and I loved having a roommate.

My son is an only child, and he loves being around kids 24/7 now that he is in boarding school.

That's cool. :)

olivia - how do you know the alumnus?

My dad's a good friend of his.

how did you approach him for a reccomendation?

I'm just going to have a chat with him, and he's going to write something about me. That's all. He offered for my dad, because he learned I'm applying there, and my dad said it would be rude to refuse, even though I said I didn't want any outside help.
