I plan on applying to Cornell for engineering for a major in chemical engineering.
What are my chances based on these stats, and do you have any tips to improve my chances. I dont mind you being critical and truthful.

Race: White (middle eastern) male
First generation student

GPA- 3.6ish (unweighted) 3.9ish (weighted)
Class Rank- Top 16% (517 students) very competitive class

SAT- 700 Math, 650 Critical Reading, 700 Writing....Will be taking again with a high chance of doing better since these scores were my first time taking it... and also maybe taking ACT
SAT II- Soon taking Math 2 and Chemistry....should be no problem getting 700-800 on both for me

AP

My weakness seems to be my GPA, class rank.

Your Thoughts and Comments are Very Much Appreciated

You have a decent chance, if this 'National Science Honor Society" is legit (I’m sure it is)… may want to write your 150 words on that (for common app). I would say above average if you score 750+ on Chemistry and Math II — Normally subject tests aren’t very important, but as you wish to major in Chemical Engineering (definitely write about that as well), high scores would solidify your interest, which is exactly what Cornell COE wants to see.

thanks, yea I’m trying to stress my interest in engineering. Would emphasizing my devotion to wrestling and desire to be on Cornell’s team help at all?

zero chances unfortunately. Unless you are a recruited athlete, it is extremely difficult to get in if you are outside the top 10 percent. This could be negated if you go to a nice prep/public school with a great rep, but otherwise, you dont really have a chance imho.

:( ok well thanks for your honest input, i appreciate it. my class is pretty competitive, but im not rly sure how it compares to other schools around the nation

Don’t let people who aren’t admissions directors tell you BS statistics about how you have no chance of getting in.

You have a unique story to be told and a unique perspective to be given to the freshmen class of 2014.

Your GPA and AP Scores attest to the fact that you are competent.
I would suggest taking the ACT as you very well may do better than on the SAT.
If I were an AdCom I’d probably take you.

thanks, yea I’m planning to take the ACT as well. A lot of my friends and my counselor said that I am the type of student that would score higher on the ACT, whatever that is supposed to mean. Ill be studying for it.
