Chances to apply for Engineering.

Hi everyone.
I'm planning on applying at UT for this upcoming Fall semester. If not, then Spring 12 for Computer Engineering.

My current GPA is a 3.3 from my local CC. Everyone knows the same story, I slacked off a lot in HS during my dual credit classes, and my GPA is now suffering from it. The thing is, I also attended my local Univ. which is UH, for Engineering during Spring of 10. This was a horrible time for me, since my mother was a victim to breast cancer, and that really took a toll on my studies, job, and persona life; a big toll. She lost the battle to breast cancer late March, and from there I just sort of "lost" interest in everything. Which my grades suffered from it:
[4] Calculus I - F.
[5] German I - D
[3] Ethics - B+
[1] Yoga - A
13 credits.
After that semester, I transfered back to my local CC, and took 18 credits in the Fall of 10.
[4] Calculus I - A
[4] Calculus II - A
[3] Univ. Physics I - A
[1] Univ. Physics Lab I - A
[3] Micro Econ - A
[3] Technical Writing - A
18 credits.

I was on full gear this past semester, with a lot of family support, and from my girlfriend. Now my question is, do I still have a shot at UT even though I screwed up my first and only semester at UH due to personal reason? I'm scared of submitting my UH transcript and bringing my already low gpa to a lower level.

Also since its Engineering, will they consider my A's that I received in both my Calculus classes and Physics class?

This semester I'm taking
[4] Calculus III
[3] Univ. Physics II
[1] Univ. Physics Lab II
[4] Spanish I
12 credits in total.

Thank you for your time.

Can anyone else offer some insight. :)

Hey AngelRaine, there’s a thread (UT Austin 2011/12 Transfer Guide) on here which you should post on - there might me more people who can give you a better insight. Firstly, is every class on there transferable? UT only considers transferable classes for admission. Go to [UT Austin Automated Transfer Equivalency System](http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/ate/) to make sure every class is transferable. When you figure out which classes are transferable, plug it into the UT GPA calculator [Registration | Registrar | University of Texas at Austin](http://registrar.utexas.edu/students/grades/gpa/calculator/) to see what the admission GPA will be that they will see. Considering your personal reasons (which I assume you wrote about in Essay C) UT may be a bit lenient, HOWEVER, UT has been known to be ruthless in terms of GPA for admission regardless of circumstances. There are a couple of older threads where people where in similar positions to you and were rejected. But seeing how severe your circumstances are, which I am very sorry to hear, they may reconsider. Especially seeing your Fall 2010 grades, they may be more understanding. I can’t tell you if you are ‘in’ or not, but considering your circumstances, I think that UT will seriously consider you as an applicant.

And as a side note, you must send in all transcripts from all attended colleges. If they find out otherwise, it’s an auto-reject.

Don’t think you would get into Engineering. Try for Computer Science, a little bit easier to get in.

[thread=1091711]Not always[/thread]

Sorry for you loss bud. In a way, I am in the same situation as you. Dropped out of UTD my first semester in Fall 08 to pursue my dream in music and go on tour around the US. At that point, I did not care about school, so I finished with a 1.0 GPA taking 13 hours. After I realized I wanted to go into medicine, I came back and took grade replacements and pushed my GPA to a 3.8. Honestly, you do not have to write optional essay C. I wrote about my situation in my SoP essay, and it came out excellent. Even if people tell you that admissions is cutthroat and mainly focuses on GPA, never let go of that hope we both share. It shows we have experience, character, and a steadfast determination to get back on our feet when we fall down. Hopefully, they see this in our application. Good luck to you.

Pinata - No one does CS, which is pretty easy to get in for CNS. But in general, most would get accepted for CNS before Cockrell.

Best of luck to OP.
