Chances to get in Cornell?

I'd like someone, preferably who is at Cornell or has been there to rate my chances:

I'm a junior right now, second language student with very high capabilities but my work ethic has been low throughout high school. I got an award for work ethic in 8th grade and since then my average has been dropping.

I do a sport -- Tae Kwon Do and I do multiple clubs for school. I am in NHS & MHS. I am the lead scorer on two quiz-bowl-type clubs at school (with competition among regional schools). Also, I have about 100 volunteer hours and that is going to rise in the next year for sure.

My GPA is not spectacular. I have a 92.14 unweighted average... which hasn't been converted on a 4.0 scale but according to this chart, that is around a 3.7. My class rank has not been determined, but I am expecting top 10%.. anywhere around 30-40th.

SAT: 2340 (CR: 750, M: 800, W: 790)
SAT II: Biology: 800, Chemistry: 750, World History: 740

Last year, I took US History and Biology APs and got a 5 on both. This year I took European, Chemistry and will be taking World History -- based off practice exams on which I got a 5 in all 3 subjects, lets assume they are all 5s as well. By next year I will be taking a rigorous courseload: 5 APs including Government, Spanish, Physics B, AB Calc and Literature as well as challenging 3 other APs.

I know that I can write a killer essay as well and while I'm not totally sure on the applying process, if teacher recommendations and such are needed, they will only boost my chances.

What I want to know is are excellent SAT, SAT II and AP grades as well as being in NHS, MHS, several extracurricular clubs and a sport enough to look past my not-so-outstanding GPA & class rank?

lol, are you asian, specifically Korean? That'll really change your whole chances. What Cornell college are you planning on applying to also?

I got in with a 3.5 (granted, the other parts of my app were better and I applied to a major that I really fit into), so your GPA definitely isn't too low. What major are you looking at?

No, I'm Russian actually.

I'm looking at several things right now: medicine, genetics, physics... yeah that's really broad but I'm not totally sure yet.

you have a good chance

I think that chart is .1 ahead of itself but I'm actually not positive...being in college has messed w/ me because all I get are letter grades and they are converted to gpa so...

But ya, I'd say go for it! You have a chance! GL!!

R u EDing? If so that's a better chance

3.7 isn't that bad.. with all your AP 5s, it shows you are learning/taking a rigorous courseload. I think your chance is good.

i'd say you have a good shot at almost any school in the country, cornell included, if you nkow how to write an essay.

oh your russian? yeah, youll get in, dont worry.

i thought u might be korean or something, like the guy above. in that case, you've got nothing to stand you out from the asian crowd. but youre russian. yeah - youre in. lol.

u and asians wave...

lol

lol, we gotta be realistic. If your typical Chinese or Korean kid had those stats and resume, they'd be just another one of the indistinguishable Asian masses. But Russian international will basically get you in.

Watch out with the extracurriculars. Pick one or two things that you are most passionate about and explain those in an essay. Don't give them an entire laundry list to work with.

hate to say im korean. i have a 3.4 gpa, and i suck in math & science. not really a typical asian.... :(

You have a very good chance i'd say. But then college admission turns out to be complete random. You see the most ridiculous idiot get in here...but ive also know geniuses who end up rejected.

Jimgotkp: dude, thats awsome. im part asian myself and i hate typical asians who grow up drilled in playing the violin and doing math league

wavebrk088: it's part of the asian-american childhood. :p

haha yeah i know, but i think the way most asian parents bring up their children is flawed.

my asian parents never brought me up that way. they encouraged me to do whatever I want and NEVER forced me to do math or science or violin or piano or whatever most asian parents think is "good" for their kids. they never kept me home to do 100s of math problems. they encouraged me to go out and make friends, party, do sports, and enjoy my childhood. heck, they never even made me take the SATs in 7th grade (like most asian parents do). They wanted me to do well, but focus my efforts on creativity, instead of the academic. I really love the way my asian parents brought me up, instead of forcing me to do literally 1000s of math and science problems. in fact, they supported me in starting my own business in highschool (something asian parents never do as long as its not math or science). and i ended up at cornell, without the typical asian upbringing.

crap this is gettin long. i should stop here. dont want to contaminate the OP's thread haha. maybe i should make a seperate thread about this.

lol, it's ok. Thanks guys, I will definitely visit Cornell this summer.

wavebrk088 awesome.. lol
my parents basically "gave up" on me on my last marking period for my jr. year. im failing chem., while getting a C in Pre Calc.. its sad.. looking at my fellow countrymen excelling in AP Calc AB who are in my grade, with AP Bio, Chem, Physics, Eng. Lit. and other stuff. They are very well talented in piano or violin.. meanwhile i play the saxophone.. im the most fake asian you can ever meet..

lol, there are plenty of white washed asians so don't feel too down.
