My daughter is thinking of applying to UNC Chapel Hill. She has straight A’s with 1 B through 11th grade. She is 6th in her class of 498 and her gpa is around 4.9 or 3.97 on 4.0 scale. She is on student council, VP of Art Honors Association, has taught 3rd grade girls in Sunday school for 4 years and played on a worship team for 4 years.
She is thinking of applying to the Dietitian program there. We are out of state so I know the odds are against us. Should she even apply? Will early decision help her odds?
Yes. Get a good SAT score. Right a compelling story why unc is a good fit for her. Give specifics.
She is taking the SAT again this Sat. (fingers crossed for a little improvement). She got a 1340 on the new SAT from this March ( I think it goes up to 1600?). Her ACT score was a 30. I like your suggestion. I wonder what scores they want at UNC for us out of state people.
Oops! She got a 1360 not 1340.
The ACT score of 30 is a little low. If she can get her SAT score up to 1400, I think she will be in pretty decent shape. Also, as suggested above, good essays are critical.
And, yes, she needs to apply Early Action (UNC does not offer Early Decision); the deadline is October 15. She will have lots of competition: http://uncnews.unc.edu/2015/10/28/unc-chapel-hill-receives-record-19682-applications-for-first-year-early-action-admission-deadline/
