Chances to getting into Uf?

Hi, I'm a junior right now and my GPA is honestly pretty low And iI was worrying if I would have a shot to get into Uf.

As of now, my unweighted is a 3.26 and my weighted is a 4.8

I helped start up a Historical Society Club at my school and I'm in NHS.

I'm in the IB program if that makes a difference and as of now, my SAT score is 1740 but I'm retaking it and I'm studying to at least break 2000. I'm also taking the act in June and I'm going for over a 30.

I've held leadership roles at my youth group for 4 years if that matters and I'm a secretary in my county's youth Council.

I don't know if there is early applications for UF but if there is, I plan on doing so.

UF is a reach… try UVA if you can afford it and score 31+/2100+

Thanks for your reply.
I forgot to say that I’m trying to stay in state (florida) for bright futures and I want to major in computer science (software-side).

Hi

UF is a (low) reach, but possible.

Below is the UF 2013 Freshman profile:

<a href=“Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida”>http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/frprofile.html</a></p>

Middle 50% of the Class

High School GPA of 4.1 - 4.4
SAT of 1780-2020
ACT of 26 - 31

UF will recalculate your GPA. The UF weighted GPA gives +0.5 points for honor classes, and +1.0 points for IB/AICE/AP/DE classes. It also only includes academic classes. Recalculate your GPA, it should be less than 4.2 (if your uGPA is 3.26). Include Algebra 1, if you took it in the 8th grade.

UF does like IB students (it likes the rigor of the program), so that’s of some help.

UF uses holistic admissions. 50% is based on GPA, class rigor, and test scores. The other 50% is based on ECs’, leadership and essay. Try to work on your EC’s over the summer. Even a job would be of help. Continue your work in the youth group, UF likes to see that you have passion in a few fields, not that you’ve joined 10 clubs.

Over the summer, also work on your essay. It is important. Of course, make sure you’ve gotten your 100+ volunteer hours in for bright futures (and it’s an EC!).

Since your wGPA is likely out of the middle 50% range, you should view UF as a low reach. Apply and you may or may not get in. You should also apply to a few of the other state universities. Several have decent computer science programs, and they may award you merit aid (always nice). It’s not uncommon for students to pass on UF, and go to USF/UCF, etc., due to the merit aid (and Honor Colleges) offered at those schools.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your detailed response!
I have at least 200 hours already for CAS (IB’s service hour program) so hopefully that’s of any importance.

I was actually thinking of UCF if UF didn’t work out too, so hopefully I can get into there as well.

Apply early to UCF (September), and you’ll get accepted by October, and merit by November. It’s nice getting an early acceptance, while waiting on the others (UF being mid February…).

I was told that if I apply early, I’m basically obligated to go to that university. Is there any validity in that statement

@itzkpanda‌ Only if you do early decision, and even then, you can break the contract for a fee. But it doesn’t matter. UF only has regular decision anyway.

And you have to be confident! Don’t use words like “if that matters” or “if it makes a difference” take ownership of what you have done. You have worked hard to accomplish what you have

UCF is on rolling admissions, so they start accepting students (for the fall term) as early as October. However, you don’t have to commit to the school till May 1’st.

With UF, you have to apply by Nov 1’st, and UF makes decisions available on the 2nd Friday of February (next year, that’s 2/13/2015). However, you have until May 1’st to commit.

FSU has two sets of dates:

Apply by mid October with a decision in mid December (Early Action, which is nonbinding)
Apply by mid January with a decision by mid March
In both cases you have until May 1’st to decide.

Unless a college is using Early Decision (ED) or some other form of “binding” admissions, you will have until May 1’st to make a decision.

Most other Florida Universities are on a rolling calendar (like UCF) for admissions. You can apply early, get an early acceptance, but not commit till May 1’st, giving you time to review other offers (and financial aid offers) from schools.

If you looking into UCF, you should also look into USF. Two very similar schools, and one my offer better merit aid than the other.

Good Luck!

Schools do not charge “fees” for declining an early decision offer of admission. They don’t.
