Chances to good UC Schools and Cali schools?

African-American; Specifically Nigerian I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA for 17 years, my whole life.
Weighted GPA: 4.32
Unweighted GPA: 3.7...
Rank 18/737

Freshman Year, Mostly Honors but 1 class
Sophomore Year, All Honors and 1 AP (the most i can take)
Junior Year, All AP classes and Spanish 3
Senior Year, All AP classes and Contemporary Media

I am possibly the worst test-taker there is...
SAT: 1510 (2010 Junior year) (to make it worse: 430 read 590 math 480 writing)
SAT (taken 4 months later): 1580 (2010 Junior Year) (440 read 630 math 510 writing)
Retook SAT this year as a senior hopefully its not too depressing =@

SAT II: Math level 2 - 640; Chemistry - 640

ACT: 26 Junior Year, 25 Senior Year (=()

AP World History: 2 (Sophomore Year)
AP Chem: 4 (Junior Year)
AP Psychology: 4 (Junior Year)
AP U.S: 3 (Junior Year)
AP Lang: 3 (Junior Year)
AP Calc AB: 3 (Junior Year)

Hmm, i can say i am an optimistic individual, always thinking positive, pretty confident, not afraid to challenge myself, hence the reason im still a senior taking 5 AP Classes; It did not seem to bad Junior Year, i can manage my time pretty well; no Job tho so yeah

Freshman Year did Tennis, Sophomore Year to now this year ill be doing Volleyball, JV and Varsity

TBH i feel bad i didn't join any clubs or get hours until my summer to senior year and this year =( I got 100+ Hours at my local library over the summer, like 30 hours per week. I am in Interact Club this year, and CSF (just started this 2010-2011 school year), and the Science Club that i made with my friends this year that helps provide tutors for those in need on science subjects (Chem, Physics, Bio, etc.)

You think i can get into UC Berk, UCLA, or USC?

BTW im in ELC and already got guaranteed admission for uc davis, ucr and santa barba, but only applied for davis because i plan to major in civil engineering.

I would focus on private colleges. The UCs can not factor in race and their formulaic approach will not favor you given scores. I think private colleges are much more likely to overlook your scores given your rank and their more holistic approach.

oooh i live in california btw, just edited it now.

dude, you are like me; failure under the meter stick of SAT and ACT =/. But you have a solid GPA and a good rank, so i think you should be fine.

Your SAT scores are not competitive for UC Berkeley or UCLA and they can not take race into consideration in the admissions process since they are state schools. USC is a private school and is not bound by California law prohibiting affirmative action in admissions but they could be reluctant to take any applicant, other than a recruited athlete, with a CR score of 440.

Hmm i seee i seee. I Re-took my SAT get results next monday lets pray my CR can raise 0.0

no chance, ur scores r way to low

LOL so your acting like that is the #1 deciding factor though!?

you should really consider some privates that strongly favor minorities. but there is still hope, last year i know 2 black girls that got 1600s on SAT with similiar GPA and both them got into UCLA. it really makes you question if UC really did banish affirmative action or not.

Usually SAT scores are not the most important deciding factor in admissions, but if there is a score that really sticks out and gives the admissions office strong reason to doubt that you can succeed at their university that one number can be very important. The first time you took the SAT you had a 430 in CR and the second time your CR score was 440 which is not a significant difference. Having taken the SAT twice and receiving essentially the same score in CR, UC Berkeley, UCLA and USC are going to be pretty confident that it really does represent your reading comprehension abilities. The average accepted freshman at those three schools has a SAT CR score at least 200 points higher than 440. Since every course you take is going to require some degree of reading comprehension, it is difficult to see how you could keep up with your classmates when there is such a huge difference between you and them in reading comprehension ability.

Yet the OP has a high rank at a large high school. Sometimes kids just don’t test well. Though I’ll say again, I think chances would be better at privates that use a less formulaic approach.

OP, I guess we will c when decisions come out then. But top schools like the 3 u mentioned only really accept people with the scores u received if they have like full rides for sports…1580 is a little bit above the national average and i doubt with the 50,000 applicants Ucla gets a year that the rest of ur app will make u stand out.

Well, you’ve got UCD in the bag, and it is a very good school. So, why not give it a try? There is no shame in having high aspirations. I do agree, however, with Lemaitre. If you were my kid, I’d worry about the prospect of your sitting in a classroom full of kids who scored so much higher on their CR and math (since you want to study engineering). So, if you are lucky enough to get in, take full advantage of those free reading sessions that they offer at the colleges before classes begin.

Good luck to you!

I plugged in your ELC eligible status, African American race (although I’m not sure why race is an optional characteristic if they do not factor it in?), and SAT score into the UC Statfinder link (listed below) and it came up that you had about a 15% chance of being accepted at UCB. UCLA will probably be similar to UCB. You may want to run it, using your GPA and your overall SAT score, but you can only run 3 “characteristics” at a time so you will have to omit one of the characteristics that I used. On the link below click on “Custom Tables”, answer a few questions, check “admit rates” (or something like that), then check the boxes of 3 characteristics that you want considered:

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/)

Okay, I just ran you again using the UC Statfinder, using ELC eligible, 3.7 uw GPA, and your 1510 overall SAT score. Your admit chances are 21.5 percent at UCB and UCLA. I did not use your w GPA because they want the weighted and capped one, and I did not know what yours was.

The UCs use holistic review which helps them make exceptions for the sake of diversity. Here’s a good example:

[For an illegal immigrant, getting into UCLA was the easy part - Los Angeles Times](UCLA said yes. Now, the hard part.)

I think the OPs rank will give adcom the confidence he can compete. His high school might not be full of Berkeley caliber students, but surely he was competing with many and did well. High school performance is a much better predictor of college success than SAT scores.

@Lemaitre1 Yeah i know my critical reading is way too low than it really should be. But i think its just a matter of fact i just can’t take test like ACT or SAT. Like, i passed AP English lang and Composition so its not like im illiterate, but i can say i really dislike to read as well as analyze articles i have no interest in; Hence the reason i hate SAT because the reading is straight up boring LOL. and obviously i can keep up with my classmates with my ranking in the school and my ability to get As in language arts; I can say that my school does not contain any super high competitiveness like…The Highest SAT at my school is 2k, and it was from a kid who came from Diamond Bar so he already had the hardcore academic curriculum in his brain. My School Eleanor Roosevelt High School i can say is only 4 years old and still pretty new, so even our rank 1 students score like 1900 on their SATs and don’t see the daylight of breaking 2k. So you think based on my school’s curriculum and it being not so competitive and hard, will UCS take that into consideration?

@Jshain Thanks for the Statfinder see, i would just like to say though, this girl at my school got 1600 on SAT, got accepted to UCLA lol; she was black though if that means anything lol. She was rank 4 and got like 5 in chem but she’s not a crazy hot-shot or anythiung. SO hopefully i still got some Hope XD

2college2college Gracias i was thinking that too. XD
