Thanks for reading/replying!

You have a great chance wherever you apply  good luck. Hypm will be a little hard due to the caliber of applicants however you have the stats and decent ecs so i dont see why not.

Thank you moonman for replying!

You have a medium to low shot at HYPSM. While your stats are great (minus the Writing score), your ECs are not very strong. For example, it says that you competed in the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament, but you don’t list an award/high score to go with it. Just competing/participating in certain ECs doesn’t show real dedication to the subject that EC is concerned with.

If you can write some impressive essays, you will definitely have a good chance at the top schools on your list. I wish you the best of luck!

Thank you StudiousMaximus, I definitely see where you are coming from for the extracurriculars thing; not going to lie I didn’t do so well at those competitions/tournaments which is why I only wrote that I participated.

I’m hoping that my summer research internship will be a success and I will be able to help co-author a paper from it. Hopefully that would be a boost to my application

You obviously are very smart, along with everyone else who applies to hypsm. While your ECs don’t jump off the page, they are not bad. I’d def try to apply to MIT EA and interview, it really boosts your chances (and its non binding) You have your Canadian backups, I’m not sure what other schools you’d get into, but probably at least one of the uber selective schools

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1177043-do-i-have-enough-good-ecs-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks patriotsfan. This is about where I thought myself to be as well, I just wanted some confirmation. Do you guys have any suggestions about what I should do my senior year in order to improve my chances?

I disagree with patriotsfan. The difference in acceptance rate between MIT EA and RD is negligible. Even the forum representatives for MIT have stated that there really isn’t an advantage applying early, except for those that are deferred. If MIT is your absolute first choice, I guess applying early would make sense, as it would indicate your preference for the school, and you might have a chance for your application to be read a second time.

However, at other universities, the early application advantage is much more substantial. Acceptance rates are noticeably higher for early application at non-tech focused top schools. I’d urge you to apply early to one of the other schools on your list, like Princeton or Yale. Their acceptance rates are significantly higher for EA than for RD.

Hmm okay I might to early action at Yale and MIT then. Thanks for the input everyone.
If anyone else wants to help me out I wouldn’t mind chancing back!

^SM, EA with interview.

Yale’s early action program is restricted, so you may only apply there early (not to MIT as well). This also goes for Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton.

Stupid Ivy Leagues, oh well I guess I’ll have to decide between Yale and Harvard

If you are sure you want to go to medical school after college, the BU’s 7 year medical program (or Brown’s medical program and similar etc…) is the best bet for you. You will be all set as long as you get in. Otherwise you will have to go through the medical school application process which is very painful and stressful.

All of the colleges that you have listed, although you have GREAT stats, can be a toss-up. But you’ll make quite a competitive applicant wherever you apply  Chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1177976-chances-stanford-berkeley-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

I really want this to be more qualitative, but I guess that will never happen haha. But does anyone have any ideas for more match schools that I could potentially apply to? I feel like the only one I can think of now is Tufts, and possibly Cornell if you want to stretch it a bit

I live in Toronto and you can definitely get into UofT or McGill with those credentials. They don’t really look for that high averages. If you want to do pre-med, the best pre-med program in Canada would be McMaster Health Sciences. It basically guarantees you into med school.

Hmm thats interesting. My dad got his degree in Canada so he has been pushing for medical school in Canada. Does anyone know if any schools in Canada have like a 6-7 year program?

Also, is Duke going to be a reach or a match for me?

Dear Poster,
I am a canadian citizen living in Iowa. I’m also an Asian. :)

I would caution you to NOT go to a Canadian school with those credentials. I went to a top 3 public high school in Ontario that sent 5 to Ivy League and one full scholarship to Cambridge in UK, and I’m well aware of the reality of Canadian med-school.
First of all, to get good grades in canadian university is FKN hard. lol. They just grade harshly.
Secondly, Canadian med schools are ‘racist’. What I mean is…at least in Ontario, they set a limit of minorities in their med school population. So it is literally 20 times harder for an Asian to get in an Ontario med school because all those over-achieving (trust me, canadian-asians go hard, especally toronto ones) are fighting for the few seats in the med schools.

A lot of my friends from Canada would probably sell their left arm and right leg just to get a Green card so that they can go through med school admission in the states.

You are very bright dude, stay in the states and you’ll have it so much more easier. Trust me. You can’t make much $ being a doctor in Canada anyways.
