I taught him how to speak correctly, write, think and express himself. Over the year, his family saw improvement, and I am very proud of this. In my essay I want to compare his obsessions with an elaborate train-set he built, to my obsessions of constantly thinking of how I could better teach him during my daily life, and help him "build" himself. I will emphasize my essays on problem solving and it's constant presence in my life.

Touching story and good stats. I say…

MIT reach
Yale reach
Stanford reach
Princeton reach
Amherst match
Columbia (College) match
UPenn (Wharton) low reach
Emory match
Duke match
Brown low reach
GWU match
USC match

Best of luck. I say you get into one or more reaches.
Chance back?: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/741629-chance-improvements-2011-urm.html</a></p>

Less than 4% with these stats get into these schools and I’m betting they play football or hockey, are rich and famous or highly accomplished URMs.

^ where does the 4% figure come from?

See their common data sets. That figure relates to those not in the top 10% of their graduating class and does not take into account the below median SAT scores.

I remember your story now and it seems you are hoping the life hardships will get you in. They might, but don’t count on it and have many schools you can get into on stats alone. Telling to me this year was a cancer survivor with a sister at Dartmouth and stats higher than yours who did not get in. There are just so many with tough lives that I think adcom are much more hardened than the CC audience.

Do you think that I need to modify my college list? If so, in what specific ways?

My (updated) list is unusual because of the proportion of reaches to non-reaches, but I feel this is the only way I can avoid debt, or at least increase my chances of avoiding debt.

I would really not mind spending my time at SMCC or a lower UC. I just don’t want to go to a mid-tier private school where I would have to go in debt. I still want to hear any comments/opinions on this method I’m taking… I’m always open to any critiques or suggestions.

Good stats for you family background. Write good essay, you are in every college you apply. good luck

MIT - reach
Yale - reach
Stanford - reach
Princeton - reach
Amherst - match
Columbia (College) - Don’t know, only heard of Columbia University. If you meant the Ivy League one, reach.
UPenn (Wharton) reach
Emory - Match
Duke - High Match
Brown - low reach
GWU - Match
USC - Low Match

I don’t know how much your story will count at each college, but I think you’ll get into at least 1-2 of your reaches.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/744907-chance-me-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

I don’t think you will have to worry too much about FA at those schools, especially the ivies, with a $20k/year income. You’d get a full ride for sure.

Yup, I’m not really worried about need-based aid for most of the schools I’m applying to. Even if one pulls something sketchy, I’ll just resort to my cheapest option. And khosla, the SATs are definitely getting a boost in November (or even December if necessary). Aiming 2200 at the least.

Incredible background story. Best of luck to you!

MIT- reach
Yale- mid reach
Stanford- low-mid reach (hmm… considering your circumstances)
Princeton- reach
Amherst- in
Columbia- (College) High Match
UPenn- (Wharton) reach
Emory- in
Duke- in
Brown- low reach
GWU- low reach
USC- in

Thanks for the chances everyone, more chances are of course always welcome!

One question, though… some of you said that GWU is a “low reach”, while to USC I’m “in”. Why is that? From what I understand, isn’t USC more selective, because of the higher average SAT scores and lower acceptance rate? Just curious haha.

If you will be happy at SMCC, your list is fine.

The problem with UCs is that there is always a large self help component, so you would have considerable loans and work study.

so in spite of the many posts above telling you that you are ‘in’ at schools your stats are low for, you really don’t have an overall safety (including financial if you want limited debt other than SMCC. UCs will be doable, but you’d probably graduate with at least $30K of debt. Why not add some of the better CSUs?

hmom5, what about GWU or BU? My SAT scores are already above average, and I’m retaking in the fall. GWU apparently gives tons of FA, and some say BU would be cheaper for me than a UC.

I’ll also look into the CSUs (I don’t know much about those schools). Any other suggestions would be great. I’m only looking for 1 or 2 low-match/safety schools, and good FA with low-loans is a must.
