Chances to MIT??

Hello! Being a small town kid from Kansas, it's hard to recognize and compare the competition I will be up against in my MIT app. I'm currently finishing out my Junior year and will be applying this upcomming fall. Please provide some constructive comments on what I should try to work on, and how you think I'm doing right now! Thanks!

Community Involvment-
This is a hard catagory because so many of my clubs do service projects, escpecially with NHS. I have lead several service projects on my own such as my Eagle Scout Service Project (overall +200 hrs), Salvation Army Bell Ringing (75 hrs.), and a Citywide Clean-Up (+100 hrs). I also have traveled to Mexico to build a house for a week (about 50 hours alone, 1000 total amongst team) and will be returing to build again next summer. Every month my youth group volunteers at a local food bank called Harvesters which is a main distributer for food banks in the major Kansas City area (about 5hrs/month). The past few years I have helped lead the drama skits for our church's VBS program (100hrs/summer) but I will be unable to do it this year because it overlaps with Kansas Boys State. This past year and this year I have been and will be a member of my NHS's Relay for Life team. Overall I would say I have done at least +1000 service hours throughout my high school career.

Work Experiance-

Lifegaurding, fun job. Not. Pay sucks, but it has great job security with incredable flexibility. This will be my second summer.

Thanks for reading through this and let me know what needs work! Thanks!

First and foremost, nice ACT and extracurricular activities. No offense, but your AMC score is low, so it wouldn’t be too beneficial to report it. Other than that, I don’t see any other major problems with your app. With that being said, MIT is still a super selective school so I would chance it at a mid-reach. Maybe a 30% chance of being accepted?
Good luck =)

Chances are not good.

Thanks! Other than the AMC which I can’t take again until after I apply, what should I do in the mean time? Think about some kick butt essays? :)

“Maybe a 30% chance of being accepted?”

Hmm, I would respectfully disagree. Maybe around 10%…

I’d say you have an average shot… Good luck!

Extracurricular activities look good, so does your GPA and ACT scores. I take it that you’re a math aficionado? I’d suggest entering in some mathematics or engineering contest. Other than that, you seem to be a solid candidate.

I’d say that MIT is a slight reach for you.

Chance me back, please! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1334226-chance-me-nyu-several-other-schools.html

Far reach.

You are expected to have near perfect/perfect scores on standardized tests in math and science to be admitted to MIT; getting them just barely gets your foot in the door.

Your weighted gpa is barely higher than your unweighted which indicates you didn’t take more than one ap or honors course which is a huge blow to your app. Most MIT admits receive A’s/5’s in several AP sciences which is very important to show you can cope with the coursework at the university.

Ecs look good, volunteering is good but well, this is MIT. Other less prestigious privates with less academic rigor but appreciate your ECS more ranked in the 10-30 range would be a more realistic goal.

I’d put your chances at 8-10%. You are probably the typical applicant, but not the typical admit.

Not horrible chances. Being from an underrepresented geographic region certainly doesn’t hurt. Having said that, there is nothing that really makes you stand out. That’s not to say that you haven’t done some incredible things; you should be proud. However, MIT looks for the best, and they sure do find them. It’s critical to stay positive, but at the same time be aware of the reality that is the competitiveness of college admissions. Good luck!

Essays won’t help unless you get the CR score way up. MITs average in one of the highest.

My current GPA is actually 4.278 or somthing like that. This is the first year I could take ap classes.

Next year my schedule is
-AP Physics
-AP Chem
-AP Calc AB
-AP Lit
-AP Macro or Micro Economics
-Band
-Choir
-Either Adv Video Production or a Private Study in Mechanical Drafting and Design

Chances don’t look great. My brother applied with 2300 SATs, perfect GPA, and an internship with a brain surgery lab. You have to be something other than just another white kid, because everyone who applies is top of their class and qualified. You have to shock the, and show them something different. Also, if your grades are not at their level, which they seem low, then they will probably be worried that you could fail out or not fit into the environment. MIT does not sound like the best fit for you…consider looking maybe more at Georgia Tech or UIUC or University of Michigan for great engineering programs.

Hope I helped! Chance me on my post!

My brother got denied, by the way. Spent a good week in the fetal position.

“You are expected to have near perfect/perfect scores on standardized tests in math and science to be admitted to MIT; getting them just barely gets your foot in the door.”

Well you do so that isn’t a problem now is it? Contrary to public perception, you do not need to be a math/science genius to get into MIT. Smart yes. Intuitive yes. But you also need to be a leader in your community. The Eagle Scout status and tons of community service could be your golden ticket. Best of luck mate, for you and me!! :)

P.S.- I am a lifeguard as well ;)

Great job eh! haha. I’d love to work for a drafting firm this summer but they rarely have openings :(

Bumpedy bump

You definitely should not report your AMC score. You should only report it if your amo index is >190 (in my opinion). Your amo index is 79.5.
