About how hard is NYU to get into on a scale? The online charts seem to be very vague. I got a 2040 on my sats (cr: 670 m: 660 w: 710) and i have an unweighted GPA of about 3.65 and my rank is like 110 / 442 the reason is because i took some of the hardest courses at my school. Do i have a chance? and how good. I will have a good essay, and 2 interships one at San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Services for Brain Injury Clinic. All other stuff controlled do i have a good chance. Should i apply undeclared would that help also?

Same for Boston University, USC, Purdue, Tufts, and University of Chicago.

Also my previous SAT score was 1850 and now i got a 2040 should i take it again i might do worse or should i stop since it shows an upward slope. Also my gpa going to colleges might increase since they take into account mid year grades and they are lookign good and my rank might go up as well.

Carnegie Mellon (not especially strong in BioMed Eng, questionable location/quality of life)
Michigan (too big, cold, engineering campus disconnected from main)
Maryland (don't need)
Johns Hopkins (questionable location/quality of life)
Pitt (don't need)

You will be left with these:
Yale (match)
Stanford (match)
Columbia (match)
Cornell (safety)
Duke (safety)
Washington University in St. Louis (safety)
Northwestern (safety)

You have very good chance at merit aid at Duke and almost guaranteed full-tuition at WustL (apply for scholarships and demonstrate interest). Other schools on your list don't give merit aid (unless you want to bring back JHU and CMU that give some half-tuitions).

leave maryland for your absolute safety (honors program). even though you are a fantastic candidate for any school in the country, nearly all of the schools you listed are obviously extremely competitive and can be quirky in their admissions.

UMD will probably offer you Gemstone and $$$, assuming you apply by the deadlines. CMU's biotech stuff is mainly grad school. If you applied rolling to UMich to get something in hand early on, I can see why you did that. I wouldn't call Duke or N'western a safety for anyone. Are you looking for merit or financial aid?

Congrats on the Torah reading -- it's quite a commitment. Both my kids read Torah as well. Some of the schools on your list will realize the significance of doing that and that it's not as easy as one might think!

Fabulous stats and ECs -- you have a wide range of talents and I'm sure you'll have some terrific choices! Given the insanity in the selection process these days, I don't think you should drop your safeties (with the possible exception of Pitt -- unless you like it better than CMU).

Gotta love your safeties -- if UMD's the default position, and you don't love it, all the $$$ in the world won't help. We have a friend who is at UMD as a safety and is not very happy. Then again, we also have friends who turned down Big Name Schools for Gemstone and are thrilled. UMD has a large and vibrant Jewish community, so that may be an attraction for you that some of the other schools don't offer.

Thanks CountingDown - Not only does MD offer great scholarships, but it is in state, a lot of my family went there, and it is great for Engineering - I think it is a great safety to have

ur money maker is ur perfect SAT ALONG with the 5's on APs. it shows real skills. if u apply to all of those im sure ull get into at least 80% of them. but i donno which ones...cuz even tho some ranks higher than others....its kinda just random. bc some schools HAVE to reject half of the 2400 ppl -__-

my two cents...you are a bright, and talented person....you might take the position of "what would I do if all of them accepted me"...now...which ones are your top 5???...this could help you narrow your choices, and allow you to focus on the applicatios and essays of the school YOU want to attend. After all you will be in the class room with the other students accepted at that school...who do you want to interface with?? and go from there...Good Luck!

the reason I'm applying to 12 schools is that after visiting most on my list none struck me as being a perfect fit (and conversely none on my list struck me as being horrible either)
I really need help making a top 5 - all of my schools have things I like and dislike and I'm always second guessing every inclination I have
any suggestions?

Geez, you need to scratch that list. Aim for burrito wrapper at Taco Bell as your reach, master of custodial arts for a match. If all else fails, I need someone to clean my room. Geesh. Bu seriously, what's important for making the top 5? If premed, i'd look at JHU (you prbly/maybe/i think could handle the competition), Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Brown, as they are the top five in terms of med school placement.

Edit: A BME major? JHU hands down, not even close. Duke is a distant second in this regard.

I figured that I would demonstrate science/math/computer interest in my EC's/SAT 2's/courses and then demonstrate bioengineering interest in essays - I've read in depth about biomedical technology but unfortunately it is hard to find EC's/activities that relate specifically to bioengineering in my area (rural Southern MD).
