Chances to transfer

Hi guys. Pomona is my dream school. A couple of months ago I moved next to campus. It's a beautiful school, the opportunities are amazing, and the academics are incredible. I really want to transfer from my CC to Pomona, but I know they accept very few transfer students.

Current School: Community College in SoCal

Latino Student, first year at CC

Major: International Relations

HS GPA: 3.6

College GPA: 4.0

SAT: 1850

Lots of honors classes in High School, about 30 something units in AP credit. I took 8 AP tests (French, Spanish, Calculus, US History, US Govt, Biology, English Lit, English Comp) and got all 4s.

EC's in High School: FBLA State competitor, French Club President, Secretary for Peer Counseling Club, School Site Council member, AP English and AP French tutor, USC Residential Program Volunteer

EC's in College: Latino Club member, Volunteer for Political Campaign, French tutor at my old high school, taking French classes at The French Alliance in Pasadena, USC Residential Program Volunteer (2nd Year), Honors Program, and a full-time job.

This is my first semester besides summer and I'm taking Calculus II, Comparative Politics, Microeconomics, Advanced Rhetoric, and a World Politics class at UCLA through the concurrent enrollment program.

Transfers are crapshoots for all applicants, as only about 5-10% get in. That being said, you seem like a very strong candidate.

Firstly, and I am not sure you know this, Pomona sponsors community college transfers into Pomona through an Alumni fund so it is DEFINITELY possible to come in as a CC student.

A perfect 4.0 GPA will help counter your somewhat low GPA and very low SATs in comparison with the school. Get a recommendation letter from a professor who can talk about your skills and personality beyond just statistics.

What I think you’re missing are genuine reasons to apply to Pomona. Yes, it’s beautiful, it has tons of resources, and the academics are phenomenal, but what do they mean for you? Where is your guarantee that you will make the most of your time there? Pomona students are ambitious, resourceful, and extremely passionate, and Pomona is willing to compromise in terms of raw numbers if you give them a compelling reason for them to take you. Find this reason, capitalize on it, show what Pomona means for you in terms of your own growth and the overall identity of Pomona.

Chance me for transfers are useless honestly; the above factor is the most important part.

Thank you NostalgicWisdom that is incredibly useful advice. I’ll take that to heart when I write my essays. There are a couple of things I am truly passionate about and I think I can convince admissions that I am ambitious and resourceful.
