Chances to UC

michellenkim, you have an outstanding profile honestly. If you are instate, im sure you will be fine with getting in! ucla is the only one i would think to worry about! good luck though. i have a question though, are you applying already for fall 2007? and if so, how?

Michelle, some good LAC match schools for you: Grinnell, Trinity, Conn College, Middlebury, Bowdoin, CMC, Scripps, Wellesley. If you can get your SATs a bit higher: Colby, Wes, Pomona.

dear iwecheerbabe828,

I haven't started applying yet, but I do know the essay questions from last year.

Freshman applicants only: How have you taken advantage of the educational opportunities you have had to prepare for college?

Tell us about a talent, experience, contribution or personal quality you will bring to the University of California.

Is there anything you would like us to know about you or your academic record that you have not had the opportunity to describe elsewhere in this application?

So, I've started my essays, if you call that applying.

I think the applications will be available in october though, so look out for those! And if anyone else has any information on the applications, please post!

Dear Suze,
haha, If I have little to no chance at Cal and LA, I should not even dare say Pomona or Wellesley, Thank you for your suggestions though!

Does help my situation that I've been in band for longer than 4 years?

hikaru: Regarding the 8 semester UC cap. All the UCs calculate the UC Weighted GPA, but teh more selective UCs like UC Berkeley and UCLA also calculate a fully weighted gpa. 4.3 in my opinion for school like UC Berkeley should be safe.

how did you get that information??

From what I've been hearing, it seems like the UC's put a much bigger emphasis on the UC GPA (8 semesters honors credit) than just the fully weighted GPA. Is that right? Also, I'm assuming that the GPA used for statistics is the fully weighted GPA being that the average for Berkeley and UCLA are both above 4.2.

michellenkim, you've taken alot of summer school classes! I'm sure that's an advantage.

i can't remember, but the info is reliable

what is the difference between UC GPA(8semesters honors credit) than just the fully weighted GPA

Michelle, no problem! And I definitely accept your virtual brownies, lol.

At any rate, the GPA I gave was what I thought was correct. I wasn't entirely sure. If you want to find out your EXACT UC GPA (as I'm not sure if I did it right) let me refer you to this website...

https://pathways.ucop.edu/doorways/list/

Run a search for your high school there. If it's in California, it should be listed. The page it takes you to will list all of the classes your school offers that the UCs consider when calculating your GPA.

Take a look at the list. Then, add up all the grades for each semester of the classes listed there that you took in your sophomore and junior years; A+, A, or A- = 4; B+, B, or B- = 3, and so on.

Then, count the total number of classes you've taken with a star next to its name; these are all of the honors and AP classes that the UCs give credit for when calculating your GPA. For each starred class, add one point to your GPA.

Finally, divide by the number of classes you've taken that the UCs are counting. I'm thinking it should end up above a 4, if not higher.

But even if it isn't above average, YES YES YES the fact you have been in Band for over 4 years will put you at a serious advantage in the admissions process. I know somebody who had a sub 2050 SAT and an alright GPA, but they got into UCLA because they were an exceptional saxophonist. The UCs tend to love people who've done Band, Newspaper, Debate, and other big-time ECs while in high school.

So yeah, while rejection is always a possibility...I wouldn't fret too much. Just keep on working hard, and good things should come! :)

eta: I just saw the page 2 of the thread...and I had not heard of the 8 honors cap before. I don't believe that is correct, as the guidance counselors I've talked to all have said the UCs consider all of the honors classes you take in the GPA.
